:(I'm getting a pony soon for my four year old daughter to show in lead rein classes.I used to have show ponies 20 years ago. I was so looking forward to renewing my love for showing. Well I was until I saw the price of everything. Joining the BSPS, getting a JMB certificate never mind the tack and outfits. I'm going to need to get a second mortgage!

That's without the transport costs, entry fees, stabling if needed, lotions and potions etc etc. We can easily spend £100 + taking one pony for one class at our local county show 30 miles away. Local shows are even worse. The classes are less taxing, more fun, and there is more choice. We've been to a show only 10 miles away, with 2 ponies, and spent nearly £150 inlcuding drinks, hotdogs etc.
Scary eh

Clare,
Why not join the NPS to start with - it's a fraction of the cost of BSPS & some of the classes (ie, show pony, LR, FR) seem to have smaller entries!

It's not to bad me and my mum try to go half on everything. i can't pull the trailer yet as i still taking lessons and haven't taken the test. so we split entry fees and petrol cost (and the food we mange to put away :S) makes it a bit easier on the bank account. But next year iv got one being professionally shown and backed by some producer friends and one being put in foal :S poor bank account. My local show is about 1 mile down the road from my house the only problem is the stables are at my mums which is 13 miles away. So i get to use fuel to go to get them ready in a morning . but they are reasonably priced at 3.50 a class for members and it's a day out keeps here going in between the county shows.

oops think ive' started something with this prices about showing business. Iv'e been thinking I might hire a box for shows rather than buy a horsebox or trailer might work out cheaper!? If anyone fancies sharing cost of hire, i'm a good driver!

God that would cost a small fortune!!! Easier to buy, boxes and trailers do seem to hold their money. Get a good second hand trailer? Have a look on ebay?? Or get one on finance, that would be same cost as hiring and at least it would be yours in the end!!!

What do the NPS have in the way of classes for show ponies and plaited LR/FR. We have always done the m&m with NPS but now have a pony we think would suit plaited but dont want to go to vast expense finding out.

what a shame showing is becoming too expensive to qualify for the rihs the levy has gone up as well as the hoys levy in this stage of the economy wouldn't it have been better to freeze the joining fees for the bsps because now people will choose not to join and what do you get for your money nothing! going to rihs and hoys is not all that just a very big expense for what a rosette if your lucky maybe some prize money but it never covers the cost. societies should try and give value for money. bsps certainly does not do that

we kept a diary of costs for about a month into the season, that was long enough to scare us silly, so now what I don't know I can't worry about,

Im gonna do it!! Keep a tally of what I spend! Might stop the OH trying to convince me I have more money than him - Keep trying to explain that a horse really cant live on fresh air and yes I do need to pay £8 for a bag of shavings for him to empty the now digested £14 bag of corn on! Ha ha darent start on the showing fees he thinks my box runs on water or something!
