My little a was recently cut (he is 8) as we wanted to use him for my 5 year old . He has now done 2 shows, and despite looking after his little pilot has been put down for constantly grabbing the reins or lr in his teeth, its like a game to him, and seems to get worse when the spotlight is on him I.e when the blooming judge is looking :-O it distracts him so much that he doesn't concentrate and the whole thing looks a mess :-( I really would like some advice hints or tips as he has otherwise been a little star taking fantastic care of my daughter and not many late cut stallions could do that ! X

Maybe put something disgusting to taste (but safe) on the reins/lr when riding at home. Something like what you can get for cribbers?

agree with above. How long since he was gelded? Did he have this habit when an entire? I would also consider putting something more invisible on in the ring, maybe pepper mixed in with saddle soap, make certain you wear gloves when handling the bridle
good luck

Thanks both, just bought a tub of crib stop gonna leave an old bridle on him with it on ( supervised of course!) The chewing was worse when entire he chewed rugs and haynets but now it seems to just be leather ! He was cut 6 months ago and besides this frustration he has been a little champ, looking after his tiny 5 yr old jockey, just a couple of quirky ways to iron out x will keep you posted

might give it up next year, I would guess that this is a hang-over from being entire

Poor chap, happily grabbed hold of the reins as normal then spat them out with a look of horror, stood in his bridle for a good 30 mins looking at the reins and chewing on thin air, was so funny his face was a picture, he kept forgetting then having a go then spitting the. Out like they were on fire! Very messy stuff tho he kept rubbing on the insides of his legs, hope to goodness it doesn't stain! May try the clove oil as a cleaner alternative thanks x
