I had my stallion running with my mares and had a visiting mare and foal. I didn't want to put the visiting pair out with my mares as they run as a tight herd.
I let the mare and foal into the adjoining paddock and let the stallion through where he covered her. I did this for a few days and it worked well, every evening mare and foal came in and stallion rejoined his mares.
The problem is, that field is normally the second field for my 3 that aren't broodmares, and the stallion has claimed it in as much as if i put anything in there he gets upset thinking he is going to get to cover something. I really could do with this field at the moment and don't know how to break this learned behavior. Any Ideas please?

Has the visiting mare gone home or is she still there in the paddock? if she's still there he's regarding it all as his patch. Is he unsettled now he has no mares to cover. All stallions get excited at this time of year and can smell mares for a great distance He may calm down as the summer goes on and you can reclaim your field..

Visiting mare went back a few weeks ago, I turned my others out in the field last week and that was when he pretty much kicked off. If i walk the dogs in the field he comes running up to peer over the hedge to make sure i haven't brought him a mare. He is such an intelligent boy, clicks on to things really easy so just hope i can get him out of this frame of mind.

My boy gets excited whenever any of mine change fields but generally settles once he realses they are not for him. I do fence off corners so he can't get right up to the girls and they never share a fence line.

There is a field between them and this field is surrounded by tall hedgerows, he can only see trough the gates and across the middle field. This is the problem, i need to rotate and always have them a field apart but can't at the moment because this field is the one he has claimed.
Have thought of putting them back and letting him learn these ponies are not for him, but the fence running stresses me into a near heart attack !!

Perhaps I'm hard hearted but if with me and as long as safe I'd just leave him to get on with it and sort it out for himself!
