I am taking my yearling to County show this year but have only had him in a headcollar so far. He is very well behaved and I don't really want to bit him as he is only 9 months old. Im struggling to find an in hand bitless bridle - can anyone advise if what I actually require is a filly slip, or something different? Am unsure as to how big a filly slip will be and if its the right thing or not? Hes currently in a pony size HC and he will be in the hunter breeding class. He is gelded. Thanks!

You could show him in a nylon bit, but attach the leadrein to the noseband. The bit just completes the picture and won't do him any harm for the short time he is in the ring. Good luck.
Edited to add - the pony in the avatar is a few days off 12 months old, and I took this photo today of the first time she has ever had a bridle on. I used a little nylon bit and she was completely happy, didn't object in any way! If I do get round to showing her, I will show from the noseband, possibly with a lipstrap on the bit so the lead rein goes over the lipstrap and noseband, so there is very little pressure on the bit.

A filly slip comes in a lot of sizes and is not a foal slip so I would used one for him the one I have is about cob size is a head piece with a browband and a fixed front to the nose with a loop through two rings to the rear that tightens if they pull to which you attach a leather lead rein. As seen here This my connie as a yearling not a very good photo I must admit but shows what I mean better picture but a bit small

if your yearling is gelded then you dont have to bit, however most youngsters especially big ones will be stronger at a show than at home, I like leevale would bit but show off of the noseband
good luck and have fun

Thanks for your replies. I think I will maybe try what Leevale suggested because then if he is really strong we have the option of moving the leadrein onto the bit.
Thanks guys!

This is extracted from the SHB website....Led Hunters should be in plain leather head collars or bridles. Two and Three year olds must have bits. Yearlings may have bits but foals should just have leather headcollars. Yearling colts must have bits. Hope that helps

Have used a Happy Mouth on my yearling filly for showing as she's pretty huge! Mouthed her with it too. Felt the need for some control, if necessary! When you're in the ring, you never know what youngsters will do!! Good luck :-)
