Hello, my daughter has a 5year old 13hh show pony. This pony is well behaved at home in the stable and being riddin. This season we have started showing her in novice classes, however she just won't behave! We have tried calmers, ear plugs, lunging and riding alot before the class, taking her to shows and working in just to get her used to the atmosphere. She is well behaved working in it's just when she is doing a class. We have also thought of my daughter being tense and making the pony like that but she is exactly the same with more experienced riders on. I just don't know what to do now?

In what way does she not behave?
It may just be that showing is not for her, have you tried taking her to dressage and seeing how she behaves?

My daughter had a lovely Shetland that we bought as an unbacked 4yo when she was 5. She did a few LR classes on him that first season, then had a fabulous FR season when she was 6 and he was 5. But when he turned 6 he became the pony from hell away from home. Foot perfect for her at home, but take him out anywhere and he spent all his time trying to ditch her After a while we gave up taking him out that year and he was just ridden at home, but Cerys still had lots of fun with him. We turned him away over winter, as we didn't have anywhere to ride, and by the following Spring, all the naughtiness had gone, and he behaved perfectly for her whereever he went. Sadly that was their last season together as Cerys's legs grew and the pony didn't. So he's now in a fabulous loan home, being a perfect all round PC pony for a much smaller 8yo boy. So maybe your pony is also going through her "Kevin" stage

She try's to rear up going really fast won't stand for the judge, we have tried dressage and show jumping and she is exactly the same, hopefully she is just going through a Kevin stage but this is my daughters last year on 13hh so she will be going up for sales soon

Presume you have checked her teeth. Do you use a different bridle/bit at the shows? What bit do you use? We go to an equestrian centre for practice and ride the pony in a regular lesson. Similar to a showing class situation but less pressure and less expensive until the problem is sorted.
Would advise taking the pony to a variety of venues, e.g. pony club activities so the pony does not get sour of just doing show classes.
Don't despair, this phase will pass as long as you don't expect it to happen every time.

Well we would have done that if she was like that all the time but it is literally in the ring not even in the working in. We do regular pony club rallys, clinics and lessons but the pony is fine on them, thanks but we don't have that kind of time to wait
