The best way to learn is to watch a few classes that you are going to compete in.
Under some rule you have to use a snaffle for novice classes byt a double/pelham if=s fine for open classes. Most people at the ringside will gladly answer any questions.

For the bit, show in what your horse is used to. If it's never worn a double, the show ring is not the place to see if it likes one or not.

I presume he is a novice if unshown so a snaffle bit [no huge bit rings ugh] havana bridle nice and workman like, no thin leather, flat plain nose band and browband, i prefer plaited reins for grip, or you can use dressage or plain reins- no thin leather again keep it workman like. If wanting to show seriously invest in a decent show saddle [havana] numnah if needed brown and discreet as possable, brown girth [leather always looks good]. Rider- keep it workman like, invest in a good tweed [try ebay] silk tie, matching scrunchie -no buttonhole, decent show hat with leather harness. Black long boots- i prefer straight top with garter strap. You can match your shirt, tie and jacket there are lots of colour schemes ie browns and greens, oh canary or cream jods and a HUGE bank balance to buy it all! Eppp. Sit at ring side and watch the producers their turnout is correct!
