I'm hoping to put my welsh cob mare in foal next year to a registered section D - this foal will be for keeps by the way, however it turns out, it will be my next & future horse. My query is, do I have to have a prefix to register the foal? I'm just wondering whether I really need to as its likely to be the only foal I ever breed!
Second question, if I do have to have one, or choose to have one, does it matter if a different society has the same prefix registered? I did a quick search on Central Prefix Register using the prefix I would like should I need/want one and it is already in use by someone registered with Horse Sport Ireland. Does this matter as I'd be registering with the WPCS?

Your prefix has to be unique as far as I'm aware I've just registered mine for my new foal.
You can have any name you want to register if its likely to be your only foal.
Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

You don't need a prefix. You can call it what you want (within reason and the WPCS remit).
Should you choose to get a prefix you need to register it with CPR and each other society you want to register with so on hat basis you wouldn't be able to use a prefix already registered with CPR.

Thanks very much for your replies Shame the prefix I wanted is taken but as I don't have to have one I don't suppose it really matters!

The other thing to remember is, you can't have a name that has been registered as a prefix either, I.e for example, i named a colt foal Deucoch Pedrog a few years ago, only to be told Pedrog was a registered prefix, so had to amend it to Pedro! The central prefix register site is handy to check names haven't been taken.

I think that's luck of the draw. I registered one as kilattle caraway thyme and caraway is a registered prefix but they let me have it. Also there is springbourne caraway!!! I've often wondered how they both got through.

I've thought of an alternate that's not registered - Castleway. I'd originally chosen Castlegate but that was sadly taken. I live in the gatehouse of castle grounds and cottage is actually built into the walls/gateway hence why I chose the name Castleway works though as past our cottage is the way to the castle

So, if you did decide to bred from your mare again and the resulting foal was Part-bred you may also chose to register the foal with (have the Passport overstamped by) eg: the NPS, AHS, CHAPS or other relevant Breed Society. Best to secure your chosen Prefix now so that someone else doesn't use it in the future. Is your first choice of Prefix still active?

I assume so, it's showing on the central prefix register currently, is there a way I could check? Yes I think I will get one registered sooner rather than later, and just in case I do ever breed from her again (or indeed her offspring!) in the future. Thanks everyone for your very informative and helpful advice
