Marmite? good grief It always amazes me the quack treatments people will subject their horses to when faced with possible life threatening conditions. Always, always stick to advice given by your vet on the treatment of sarcoids. The people who will tell you they've 'cured' sarcoids by using Crest toothpaste or (and this is a first for me) Marmite, were probably actually dealing with warts which would most likely have disappeared on their own. If any of these 'cures' were really effective don't you think the drug companies would have found out by now?

I sold my mare earlier this year who had very bad sarcoids and they were sarcoids (not warts) and he has used toothpaste on them and they are GONE! I will ask him I send me before and after pics if he has any, he was only on the phone to me the other day saying you would never know they were there. Echinacea brewed in to a tea and poured in the feed can also help x

I know of a pony who now has a death sentence because her owner listened to rubbish like this and used toothpaste on what turned out to be a malignant sarcoid.

Actually, we have also had success with crest toothpaste. We've had one youngster that developed warts and yes, they disappeared on their own. Another youngster had one on his chest, we left it alone thinking it would do the same as the other youngster and it didn't. So tried the toothpaste as had heard people had good results and sure enough, within a week the sarcoid dropped off

I wonder why the medical profession hasn't discovered this cure for cancer then?
It would save the NHS a fortune in treatments.

No need for sarcasm!! they were modular and flat sarcoids she had both types, the op has asked for an opinion and that is my experience of sarcoids and toothpaste, I'm not criticising your experience so don't criticise mine!

Agreed. Flo1 unless you're a vet you're not really in a position to question other peoples experience with treatment. Especially as we both said it worked, how can you question something that's been successful?

I'm not trying to patronize anyone and I still maintain that such posts are very irresponsible. YOU may be experienced but many reading this post will not be and may put their animals at risk by using quack remedies instead getting veterinary advice. I suggest that you and the OP read this from the University of Liverpool (who are experts in the field i'm sure you'll agree) Taking note of points 3, 7, and 23. www.liv.ac.uk/sarcoids/sarcoidfacts/Doesn't mention toothpaste or Marmite though.

No I am not irresponsible at all! What people choose to treat their horses with is up to them and no one else. I have known many cases gone through vet referral and found it extremely harsh on their animals using the Liverpool cream and have had sarcoids either removed or used the cream and they have returned anyway!! So I personally would want to use the veterinary referral as a LAST RESORT! My mare was fully insured and I could have put her through the stress of lots of veterinary treatment but toothpaste did the job just fine, they may come back BUT you can go through veterinary procedures and they may come back anyway!! So each to their own!!

We've tried everything on one of ours, toothpaste and mouth wash daily and it made no difference, it's also been treated with Liverpool cream which made no difference! Have recently tried aloe Vera jel as we use it on everything else and actually it's reduced it in size! I really think every horse and sarcoid is different and responds to different things, trial and error is probably the way forward, within reason obviously!

I swear by the forever living aloe products, my stallion has got a scar he got from wire as a baby and five years later the hair has never grown back but I've been using the aloe gel too the last three week and the hair is definitely coming back. Sadly what works for some May not work for others and that's why I say each to their own, no one can say you should do this or you should do that as that may not be right for your animal! X

My horse had a supposed sarcoid removed under general anaesthetic as a two yr old. When I was concerned about more lumps that appeared my vet insisted they were sarcoids and wanted to 'pop them out under general!' I asked for a referral to Leahurst. The vet was grumpy about it but couldn't say no as it was my insistent request. We saw Prof Knottenbelt himself. He took a biopsy and telephoned me later that day.... They were fly bumps!!!!! Vet got sacked. So.... All I'm saying is, if it's possible to be referred to him then GO FOR IT! He is a great guy!
