we have rubber mats with hemp on top. Briliant no mess, no waste and takes 5 mins to skip out even the messiest pony and 20 mins to do the once a week muck out!

We use straw - nice and cheap and can make a nice soft, deep bed.

aubiose! fantastic though its 9 quid plus, shavings are hard to get hold of at mo because of credit crunch, joiners are struggling to get work and shavings are a by product

Love straw, cheaper we get ours £1.80 a bale and its lovley fluffy golden straw, and they all have big fluffy beds. I think shavings are to expensive.

Chopped straw for us - shavings just too expensive. We pay £3.50 a bale.

I'd love to be on straw but can't as it's against yard rules! But when we move and take my horse with us he'll defenitly be on straw. Might even buy some more horses

We use wood chippings on very thick rubber matting, they are cheap as chips and last for ages. I only use 1 bag between 2 stables all week and they have lovely thick beds. Very dry - Love them. ;D

Ive got one on straw and one on shavings, dont mind either the starw bed looks best and all cosy warm but the shavings is quicker to muck out.
A wee tip for those of you that use paper, my sister gets her paper from the local council for free! its all shredded and ready to use and she gets as much of it as she needs. Works a treat ;D

We use hemcore, same as auboise but the bags are bigger and it is cheaper!
I hate straw as it is smelly and shavings are so messy they end up all over the yard, I tried easi bed but found that it was far too heavy to muck out and we went through far too much of it.
I'm finding on hemcore it is a bag every 2 weeks per stable which is really good

I use woodpellets from Liverpool wood pellets. I had used shavings for years until they became so expensive. I have used the pellets for about a year, and would not use anything else now.

Straw could not use anything else, nothing nicer than evening stables and most of the ponies are snuggled up in deep straw beds.

Just switched both mine to bedmax a few months ago from laysoft (the splinter wood based shavings) and straw prior. The cost to keep beds decent is 100 a month, after reading a review in HH of bedmax and cardboard from the green mile company the person was using the same as me in shavings (aprox 3 a week) found it made a huge saving by using only one of cardboard a week. The cost of the bale the same - very tempted at mo as would seriously reduce my outgoings. I loved cardboard when on before just not how heavy it is on the weekly dig out and i have a bad back..still wondering. My preference, without thinking about cost is bedmax every time

At our yard it is strictly shavings only and it is very expensive at £7.00 a bale but my pony was on the super lite mats that were very thick and foam like so she didnt really need a big established bed as if she was on thin mats or concrete. I prefer shavings as they smell better and look neater.

I use sawdust and wood pellets mixed. The saw dust is cut wet so not at all dusty. Makes a huge fluffy bed and very very cheap. It costs me £4 to put a new bed in a 12x12 stable. I put a couple of bags of pellets mixed in for the very wet ones and it absorbs better than anything else i have tried over the years.

wood pellets and shavings mixed I now use , was on straw for a while but back to shavings I simply dont have the time to muck out 4 mucky straw beds every day , shavings may cost more but the time saved is worth it ;D

Aubiose or hemcore. They work best deep littered- which I usually cant stand, but there is no smell of ammonia at all. The hemp pulls the wet to the bottom , so when it comes up after a month or so I just take a couple of barrows out and put another bale in. I use 2-3 bales a month tops. Cost is high but it is the least smelly and dusty so better for the ponies. Also VERY quick as I just skip out daily. Straw looks lovely I agree BUT it is destroying your horses respiratory system, whether it is showing yet or not. Please dont take my word for it, just google...!
