I think Shavings are getting pretty expensive and hard to get hold off nowadays. I've never tried Cardboard and i think straw is easier to muckout and absorbant but i dont know how much it costs as when i used it i was looking after 2 of my friends horses.
What does everyone else think?

Using rape straw - Nedbed!!!! A bit slippery but doesn't stick to poo like shavings so easier to hand pick!

Just changed back to straw after nearly 9 years on shavings and we are saving a small fortune! Cost of shavings per week £63 for six stables including two mares and foals, cost of straw £24-00!

Easibed for me, I know it is difficult to get hold of at the moment but they should be up and running with the new machine after Christmas.

I used to use shavings, but to expensive now. I have gone back to straw now, Find it much much cheaper and easier to muck out! If you can afford it I would get rubber on your floors. I still give good beds but don't bring it right to the front of the boxes. Good luck in whatever you decide.

straw, shavings and easy bed- all on mats
not bothered about what, but i prefer my really flat, level straw beds with perfect banks- yeah, i'm a bit of a perfectionist- for the pony who just goes in and pull banks down- grrrr

Straw for me, horses prefer it, they can rottle in their beds at night, stops them from getting bored.

shavings are a luxury, straw is just a no go for older ones. Has anyone contacted their local wood yard for wood chip, careful which wood but is more than cost effective, warm, clean, smells lovely and deep. I have 28 most over 25 years and would be lost without it. You do need a very large trailer and tractor to collect it. Only downfall heavy to muck out, may not suit our limbs, but suits our horses, which is the most important

we use shavings. Next summer we will be buying in bulk, storing it and keeping for winter and buying in what we need during the summer. We can only use shavings on our yard.

sundown red its the reli good smelling cos its got eucalyptus oil in it itspart shavings bit like bedmax ones and chopped straw hard to get hold of if you want to start using them but we sell ares off to people in the area they only do full 16 pallet loads which is fine for us as we have the space which is the only down side not everyone has the space but weve tries pretty much everything and i think its just under £5 per bale and they have a lot packed in to a bale and there not heavy for mucking out easy for skipping out too xx

We use straw at only 60p a large bale of barley straw, we can fluff beds up with big banks and remove as much as we want so there beds are fresh and the wastage isnt such a problem as to strip the whole bed it would only cost £1.80 to do a whole new bed from nothing.
We have youngsters and foals which chuck there water bucket all over there bed so its often chucked out when wet rather then dirty so would be silly on shavings as not cheap to replace for us.
We were thinking of changing our stallion over to shavings at one point but after looking at the cost seems daft when hes happy on straw.
Roll on summer when they are in late and out early!

You wouldn't buy it here for that £2.65 for a small bale! Using woodpellets at the mo, seem fab. HATE STRAW!!

a friend of mine uses shredded paper, her mum and friends collect paper from companies, old avon mags.etc and through the long winter evenings they shred it all into bin bags and store it in a spare stable. it is really absorbant has no smell is light and fluffy like straw and is completely free. plus even a grey pony stays clean on it unlike shavings when you've bathed for shows.lol

Cardboard for me - its easy to muck out (although I have not taken out the deep litter yet, but if it's heavy will just do it in small loads) the cost is £4.50 per bale incl VAT. I collect from the manufacturer. Am going to foal down on it this year so will report back when the happy event happens

My ponies/horse are all on cardboard which is £3.80p per bale. I used to use shavings but gave it up when it became £7 per bale. Although I like straw which is £3.50p here I cannot justlfy skipping out a straw bed at 6am on my way to work as I am sure my colleagues would have something to complain about (smell). We do have rubber mats under our beds which makes it much easier.
