Can anyone tell me why there were so few highlands at hoys compared to the other m&m classes? I don't know much about the m&m world but it stood out to me on the day and I was wondering if there was a reason. Are there just fewer highland qualifiers?

It's a shame isn't it, we watched on Wednesday in the CALDENE arena and we were surprised how few were there :-(
Can't fathom out why there weren't more either, maybe a lot of the highland owners just didn't do the qualifiers this year, how sad..
Lets hope next year there are many more coming forward :-)

Not sure but it could be to do with the lack of qualifiers up in Scotland and maybe people don't have the money to spend to go further afield like they used to.

I've not seen that many highlands out competing this year more section D's and fells. But there were some beautiful ones at hoys on Wednesday.

There are few highland pony only qualifiers. More than half are combined fell/dale/highland classes, and at about 10 shows the highlands get their own qualifier. It is the same with the connies/new forests. New Forests got their own qualifier at about 9 shows, the rest of the time they are combined with connies

Thanks! It is such a shame but beautiful ponies forward! If they have their own class at hoys why not have their own qualifiers? Doesn't make sense to me but like I said...I don't know much about how the m&ms work.

There 10 Highland only and New Forest only qualifiers. There are 12 mixed breed qualifiers where they also have a chance to qualify (new Forest/Connemara and F/D/H) This year 12 Highlands qualified

As others have said, there were fewer Highlands, because they have fewer direct opportunities to qualify. Their class is often one of the biggest in qualifying rounds so hopefully Grandstand Media will increase the number of direct qualifiers at some point (they were only introduced last year - it used to just be a Fells/Dales and Highland class at HOYS).

Highland classes have been full this year 25 plus .in numbers and no Highland only qualifiers in the south and south east. Perhaps Grandstand Media will review the situation as currently it means there is little incentive to carry on. They are a popular breed and should be acknowledged as such.
