Lots of products to control weight but need something to put weight on and keep it on. She is 15 months old and has always been lean but is now working and looks like a whippet. Vet recommended trying pasta (likes) and/or Hills performance (not overkeen). Hasn't come into season yet which is probably weight related (don't want to breed yet) but would like to if she works well. She is fed morning and evening, eats up but won't eat a bit extra has bonios etc.

My staffy is the same, she is literally like a whippet. I keep getting asked is she a cross or a puppy. She was 1 in July. I have just changed her on to simpsons hypoallergenic food and pet mince from my butchers (pigs heart and liver that I cook) and chop my own veg up abd put that in also, she appears to be putting weight on as you can't see her ribs as much now. My dogue cross was over 18 months before she had her season so wouldn't worry to much about that :-)

1 of my boxers was like this, full of energy with a lovely shiny coat but stick thin. I tried everything but nothing could get her to put weight on. She had a mammary tumour removed in March and they spayed her at the same time. Well what a difference!!!! Within a couple of weeks she was well covered and looked a healthy weight instead of a walking skeleton. Discussed it with the vet who said her weight would more than likely have been hormone related and advised unless the bi*ch is going to be bred from then spay after the first season. I will definately do this in future. My girl was spayed at 7 years

Interesting about the hormone angle, don't want to spay as would like the option of having a litter if she proves as good as we think. She's full of energy, lovely coat but just so skinny and there are very few dog weight gain products on the market.

Our Irish Setter is just over one year old now and I cant get weight on her, she isnt a foody shes a picker
Tried all sorts to tempt her but her stomachs sensitive and she needs special dog food so anything I add upsets her!!!
Then theres our other dog, the good ole hoover 'il eat anything and everything' Labrador who we struggle to keep weight off!!!!

if you find the spaying expensive try the animal trust, they are not for profit vets available to everyone. we pay £98 for a spay on any sized dog

we have a young labrador. she was on a food with chicken and rice which should be good for a dog with a tender tummy . She didnt put on weight. We changed her on to the lamb version and she then started to look more like a lab( Not fat) She cant have any rawhide chews as she is violantly ill and her weight drops quickly. so diet is critical for keeping her weight on.

My daughter's Springer is exactly the same. She has found that a mix of wet dog food (high in protein ie Butchers) boiled rice and cat biscuits has helped with the dog's weight. I noticed a big difference when she came home at Christmas with him.

I would strongly recommend taking any dog with a problem off a "complete" food, and use a food that has NO ADDITIVES!! Butchers Tripe (tinned) is additive free, and if fed with straight biscuit i e terrier meal, Not a Mixer, it is a very good and easily digested food also easy to adjust amounts without having a huge dishful which the dog doesn't finish, esp. if you are looking for weight gain! An alternative is a frozen raw meat, which can be defrosted in desired amounts and fed with biscuit (wheat free if necc)
Hope this helps - Good luck

It is possible to find makes of complete dried dog food that use only natural ingredients with no additives, but you have to read the list of ingredients! I always reckon the fewer the better, same with human food too.
But I do so agree with you. I've always used a natural feed, and was talking to a friend yesterday whose dog itched. A week on a new, suitable, all natural food and he stopped itching completely.
