The amount of people I come across on Facebook asking to buy bute.
Today someone posted on a page "my horse has been kicked and is very lame can someone sell me bute! "
Working at a vets I know how dangerous bute can be. Who would want to be responsible for giving it to someone else's horse, you don't know.
GET THE CHUFFING VET OUT
Rant over!

I get asked for it alot as mines on danillon. There is a reason it's a prescribed drug and I have to pay for regular check ups so they need to put their hands in their pockets and pay to get the vet out!!

My old yard owner used to give it to everyone for anything.......generally those who couldnt afford a vet or were clueless as to the dangers. She actually told one girl to start giving it every day as her horse was getting stiff on her back end. Sold it for couple of pounds a sachet. Needless to say I left said yard.

Hmmmm. I'm on the fence here. I have a pony who had mild lami this year. I'm very experienced with horses and have a very good remedial farrier. I needed bute to ease her for a few days. The result was a vets fee to tell me what I already knew and give me 10 sachets of bute. The total cost £46. Bute cost - £8. Quite a substantial amount I didn't really need to pay. And that was on a routine yard visit where we don't pay a call out. Otherwise there would have been another £40 on top. So, for things like that no I don't need to call the vet but obviously for other things and for people who are less experienced who don't have the experienced network of people round them that I also have then yes they should call the vet.

I am with Philippa on this one as I also have a mare who can have a mild tough of lami. If I catch it as soon as she shows any sign and ease the symptoms with Bute I can get her 100% in a matter of days.
