My daughters foal is absolutely minging in the stable it is just mashed up straw everyday!
Just wondered if anyone could recommend an alternative. Have thought of mats but thought a nice bed was better at this age. He is 14.1 now so not going to get any better as he grows into a giant!

We use finely chopped straw and we have two together in the stable so you can imagine what it can get like. We find that a lot cleaner than Un chopped straw. We also put a bale of shavings under the chopped straw. Easy to clean out and they don't drag it round as it's finely chopped.

that should be big enough, often people keep them in very small stables and then wonder why they get filthy!
however if this foals has recently been weaned he will move around more, once he settles he should be cleaner. It will not make a lot of difference what sort of bedding he is on, if he trashes his bed then that is what he does! I would consider matting with a light layer of bedding easy to clean out but with big straw banks. Basically the bigger the stable the cleaner he will be and it will not be long before he will need a much bigger stable.
good luck

Thanks gillwales..
He was an orphan foal so quite happy being alone he just like to do it in one heap and dig the banks up haha so it's one heap in the middle!

Then I would go down the distraction route, try giving him some toys, hang up a swede on a string, or a cheap plastic watering can, if you have more pennies one of those treat balls would be good. a cheap roll out stick on mirror, try ebay. If he is busy playing then he will not be trashing his bed. Also try gelding, that may settle him or at least prevent him from getting worse!
If it is your stable then put matting on the walls to prevent hock injuries etc.

We will go and buy him some toys today. Had to build him a hay rack as he eats my nets went thro 5 in a week!
He is a real lovely boy just a baby and with the weather like it is had to bring them in. He did find it amusing to play with his water bucket too haha I soon sorted that with a brick!
