Having had a few unwanted dramas with several rugs this year I wondered if anyone had comments about rugs that they felt were badly made and not up to the stresses of being worn by a pony/horse in a field.. My first event was when a brand new Rhino rug was only on the pony 2 days when it suddenly slipped off her and I realised one of the belly straps had just fallen on the ground -undamaged but with no stitching in evidence. You couldn't even see marks on the rug where the stitching had been. Yesterday the binding came unravelled from a new Mark Todd rug and caught round the pony's tail- now the rug is fraying round the edges. I feel both the above were not caused by the pony doing anything wrong!! I think the rugs and /or stitching are not as robust as they used to be.

That's a great shame, especially as I was about to sing the praises of Mark Todd rugs! We've had ours in MT turn out rugs for years with no problems at all; they fit the ponies well, are warm, waterproof and, best of all, not ridiculously expensive. Guess that, as with anything, sometimes it's possible to get a 'dodgy' one.

If you are looking for a good rug, go for premier equine! All out horses are in them and you can ajust the weight of the rugs by clipping on different liners. The necks are elasticated as well so they dont slip down, definitely keeps them cleaner!!! www.facebook.com/IzzyChaplinDressage

Unfortunately I would have to agree about the Mark Todd rugs. I've found Robinsons very good

I am really lucky and have had very little trouble with rugs in the last 20 years with my lad. I have had stitching go on one derby house and one horsewear. Both were the neck covers and took both back to the shops and got replacements which were fine. I've just bought a shires turnout, never had one before as I normally stick with more expensive makes and was looking at the premier equine ones but the other horses in our field can be a problem so didn't want to spend £100 on something that might only last a day lol. I'm looking forward to seeing how the shires works out.

i find the rambo/horseware/amigo range fantastic fit and quality is well worth the extra money. Derby house are dreadful, i have had numerous rugs ripped to shreds, fasteners fall off/need replacing and two are un fixable and in the bin. i personally dont have experience of poor quality mark todd rugs but have found them to be extremely heavy, masta rugs are in my opinion a poor fit and having tried on many occasions to buy as a cheaper rug have always been disappointed, however the detachable neck covers are nice and generous.

Rambo is a top of the range rug but Amigo has various types.Mio,Bravo are 2 but their fittings are smaller and weaker.Rhino wugs have lost their quality and I have bought these for years.Recent ones have just not worn at all well. I think Mark Todd ones are a slim fit but I like the design.

My Mark Todd and JHL always came up huge. I have found all the Horseware one fit well and seem to be sized the same. I have bought a Mio for yearling and was pleasantly surprised by the quality.

I go for horseware rugs. They always last a long time on mine and do thier job. All thier 6fts fit my welsh cob perfect.
I bought a lightweigh turnout from ruggles at rihs 2 years ago and was very dissapointed that it leaked on the two occasions i used it. So i put it back on my shelf and someone down my yard has actually stolen it now! Annoying as it is when people steal things Thier welcome to it!
