hi there i own a welsh sec d gelding part bred i thought all horses,cobs take the prefix of the father his father is hendrewen texas and mothers name is tywctya nanci and my horses name is tycwtya daffydd why has he got the prefix of his mother his breeding has got the whole of his fathers side but only his mother, grandmother on her side somebody has said that this is probably because he was an accident and wasn't meant to happen, therefore too mothers prefix any info on this would be great? ?? thank you

I understood it was the prefix of the stud or breeder, so if they used a homebred mare and an outside stallion, that would explain why is prefix is the same as his dam.

The prefix comes from whoever owns the dam at the time of foaling. Not always the breeder because you can buy an in foal mare and give it your prefix when you name it, if you have a prefix. As your horses prefix is the same as his Dam that would mean they used one of their own bred mares and sent her to someone elses stallion, as Millies mum said above.
When a breeder registers a horse they can only use the prefix belonging to them, so unless they own the sires prefix, they cannot use it.

its the prefix where the foal is born my foals have my prefix even though their parents have different prefix. if they are born to a person without a pre bought prefix they usually just have a "name".
