Just wondering how wears black velvet in the show ring - is it accepted or do most wear navy. I personally prefer navy but have been offered a gatehouse hickstead black velvet hat cheap . Thanks in advance - ponyclubpartbred

We always showed our Section B in black tack and my daughter wore black hat and boots. He was dun with black legs, mane and tail and the black suited him much better than brown. It never did them any harm, although apparently it is 'de rigueur' to wear brown tack, in which case I guess navy hat and brown boots are better. Quite honestly I can't see why it should matter; it's meant to be the way of going/conformation of the horse that counts, not the colour of the jockey's hat!

I think the colour of the hat should ideally match or complement the jacket.
Brown tack is traditional but I don't feel that black tack is frowned upon as much as it once was.
Just a thought, is the hat you've been offered a new one? I wouldn't risk using a hat that has been used and maybe involved in a fall....now matter how cheap. There are plenty of hats that are suitable for the show ring now that won't break the bank.
