Does anyone know if you need to be a member with the ncpa to register a horse/pony with them? THANKS

There's nothing on the pony registration form about including a membership number so no I don't think you have to be a member to register a pony.

Tinkerbell - no you don't
However you would not be eligible for the free points scheme with your pony, as only members can enter that.
These classes or rosettes are only offered at NCPA run shows and if you become a member you get discounts on the entry fees (among many other benefits) so it is rather unusual for people to register an animal with us who have not chosen to be members.
If you have purchased an animal who is already registered with us, you do need to transfer the ownership into your name (cost £5)

I am the owner of the pony not the rider - so if my mare was to place high enough for one of the member only rosettes she would not be entitled to it as the rider is not a member? Is that correct?
Thanks

Tinkerbell there are two different issues in your post.
NCPA Registered rosettes are awarded to the highest placed NCPA registered animal in the class nominated in the schedule & almost entirely awarded at NCPA shows (although occasionally other shows apply to award them for special events)
The animal's pink registration card MUST be presented to the judge/steward in the ring at the time & some schedules specify the rider/handler to wear a red armband to make identifying the animal easier. This is purely down to the animal being registered with NCPA regardless of the rider/handler being a member of the association.
"Member" rosettes are a different matter. These are usually called STAR Rosettes. The schedule of any show affiliated to NCPA including our own events will list classes where these are awarded.
These star rosettes are then awarded to the highest placed NCPA member (ie rider/handler) who is wearing their NCPA badge & produces their current membership card to the judge/steward. This year's membership cards are gold (because it is NCPA's 50th Golden Anniversary in 2014)
Hope this makes it clearer for you.
Basically only current members can de awarded the star rosettes & registered animals can win them regardless of whether the owner is a current member.
