Hi everyone, Sorry to ask these stupid questions again !! But I currently have my pony in a Mullen mouth Pelham ( the one with the plastic) but would I get marked down for having this in the show ring ?if so which Pelham is the best- he has a very soft mouth but struggles to stay round and on the bit. Thanks

Not all do, some have mouths too short to take two bits comfortably, although I'd agree a double is much better than a pelham if the pony's happy in it. My D didn't like a double, and I showed her in a rugby pelham in which she went better.

I prefer to ride in Pelham as they are kinder to horses mouth rather than Double also I always having trouble with Double as we don't got on well, lol.

In a double you have the option of riding just off the bridoon rein with no curb action, which is not possible in a pelham which tries to combine the different actions of both bits in one. So I consider a double to be kinder to the mouth.

I think the main thing is to ensure that the bit is correctly fitted, this can often cause problems when using a double bridle. Consider the curb chain and very important are the hands using the bit!
We have however diverted from the original question, as I said previously it should not make any difference as it is a legal bit, however different judges may have their own opinions, however most will not penalize a pelham, for me it would be things like a ( dare I say it? ) wilkie being used has a bradoon! or incorrectly fitted noseband

you shouldn't get marked down for it although if you are worried you can speak to one of the bit makers and they can probable make you one, i had one made for my Shetland so it looked smart but had a mouthpiece he liked.
