Hi I have a beautiful warmblood gelding who gets very attached to mares at present he's attached to one mare and gets very worked up if she's taken away from her even tho there are other horses in the block he will drip with sweat on some occasions. Can any recommend a good calmer that actually works

Something magnesium based which is used daily as opposed to one shot. Try to limit contact with that mare and try to vary who he is with on a regular basis. Seems like he's got it bad for her lol

i have this problem with a gelding and a mare but not quite so bad as you. With us, it is mostly that he won't load onto the lorry and leave her behind. And she is very old and a poor traveller so I don't feel I can use her as a companion. What is working at the moment is that if we are going anywhere, we turn her out first thing in the morning to get her out of the way. Then by the time we come to try and load, he looks and calls for her to begin with then 'locks on' to our other pony we have already put on the lorry, because he does not want to be on his own. In addition, he used to be stabled next to the mare and we have now put our other pony in between them. So I would agree with the advice to limit his contact with her and use other companions where possible to break the dependency. It has been a struggle to deal with. I have tried all sorts of loading techniques but it's not about the loading, it's about the separation, which is much more difficult to resolve as I don't want to get rid of either of them! thankfully he is a saint under saddle so all is forgiven. good luck and please feed back anything you find that works!

Meant to say, our other little pony was quite highly strung when he arrived so I have been feeding a calming supplement regularly. He is certainly much more chilled now, and although obviously this might be partly the settling in process, I have tried 3 different brands, he is currently on top spec calmer which is the one i would pick from the 3. You have got to give the supplements several weeks to kick in though so it's not a quick fix.

I am thinking of trying rigcalm as I have read a few good reviews and I feel it is hormonal. I can take him to shows etc fine I just think he feels safe with mares it's odd.if I.turn.him out with mares and geldings he will go to one of the mares and follow her round all day grazing

Does he pick the mares that are in season at the time? If there's any chance of him being a rig the vet can do a blood test for testosterone level which would tell you - if he is it should be sorted out, but your vet would tell you all about it.

I really shouldn't make light of this thread but upon reading the title I just had to click on it to satisfy my curiosity as I interpreted the title as meaning you were concerned about a horse having separation anxiety over losing his testicles during the gelding process! I really must see a psychiatrist! Wishing you and your gelding well and hoping he gets over his anxiety xx

He has another gelding next door to him. He is fine if I turn him out and take my gelding to a show but if I bring them in and take my gelding away to be ridden he goes nuts when hes taken away. Or even if I tie the gelding outside and he cant quite see him. A lot of people have said hes only a yearling it will be fine but I am not sure he should get that attached? He has another friend in the stable next door to him too!

me too, although i am having this problem with a mare i am currently using regumate to stop her from coming in season as she is a nightmare! but when i am wanting to hack her out by herself she panics and wants to get back to the other horses, she also tries to nap when riding her at times and i feel she is anxious when taken away from other horses, has anybody else had this problem or what i could do to try and help her? i read further up about maybe some magnesium?
