Help!! My lurcher pup howls and barks all the time I'm out. He is fine while I'm at work I leave at about 7:30 and arrive home about 12:30 and hes as quiet as a mouse. How ever if I go out after this for any length of time be it 10 mins or 2hrs he howls and barks untill I get home. My neighbours are fed up and quite rightly so. I'm in a rented house and I'm worried that I will end up with a eviction notice if it carries on.

Find a dog sitter for him? Or consult a dog behaviourist?
He's only a baby by the sound of it and thinks he's been abandoned. Dogs don't realise how long you might be gone, just that they've been left. Our rescue saluki howls when he thinks neither of us are in the house so we're lucky we don't have near neighbours. He was very damaged and has severe separation anxiety, but 7 years later is at least much better, he hardly ever tears things up now!

Mine are left with filled kongs/chews and toys... and each other my collie x spaniel was a terror for separation anxiety...she was attached to me... so i got a behaviourist who told us how to work with her and then eventually got her a friend (my puppy)...problem solved another dog does not always work - so start building up the time you leave your puppy for - leave the room... an hour etc

We already had two dogs when we got ours, but it's us he misses. Much better when left with filled bones, or now what came as filled bones with dog biscuits jammed into them - he's discovered the best way to get those out is to throw the bones down the stairs. Obviously I don't know if he howls when we're out and away but a third party who was here when we were out and the phone rang told me they both howled all the time it rang. Daft dogs.

Do you leave the radio/TV on at all, mine love the company of a humans voice so I leave the TV on for the all day, it distracts them from me leaving, and they don't hear as many noises outside, so they don't bark at people walking past the house etc.. Perhaps go out for 15 mins then come back, then 30 mins and come back and make it slightly longer each day until he understands that your coming back.. Good luck..
