I have a rising 2 year old filly and this year we were plannig on sharing a field with a friends 3 yr old, he is due to be gelded ASAP and I was just wondering how long it is till he is 'safe'?? Some say 4, some say 6 or 8 weeks? Don't want my filly to be in foal!! Thank you

I've heard 8, but they can retain the hormones longer than that so may behave like a colt and cover your filly, just not be fertile.

Could you divide the field with an electric fence while he gets over his op and his hormone levels drop?

Well there are other groups I could go in it was just so they could be out 24/7...I may speak to my yard owner and see what other options are. Thank you

When we had our colt gelded last year in the vet college (he was a rig) we were told 12 weeks minimum to be sure.
