So we went to a working hunter clinic yesterday and the judge recommended that we should wear a tie pin (M&M Working hunter). I've been looking online to buy one and an getting confused as to what is correct; should I have a tie bar (that goes through the corners of your collar under your tie and has a chain)or should I have a pin that is straight across and pins to my tie just below the knot / above my jacket neckline? Thank you.

You should have a tie that doesn't flap about! A tie pin may be useful but not essential, you don't want it to spear you/ become tangled in the mane should you fall forwards. Some shirts have a facility to tuck the tie in and this may work just as well.

The tie bar will only work if you have pinholes in your collar. I use to use them, but got fed up faffing about with them and the shirts I wear now don't have pinholes. You can get lots of options for different tie pins on ebay. I would think the judge meant the type you wear lower down to stop your tie flapping about.

make certain it is horizontal and not vertical for safety sake

My daughter always wears a tie pin to fix the tie to the shirt and a collar pin to keep the collar looking neat. Her shirts never have pin holes but I make them using a brad awl pushed through into a cork place mat - works a treat! I bought both pins off Ebay without paying a fortune for either.

A top producer once said at a clinic I was at that he hated them due to the damage they could do in the event of a fall.
Why ban body piercing (inc ear studs with some societies) and then allow tie pins?!?

Sorry, not really being facetious - it is a serious consideration. I may have a rethink now.

The ball end ones screw in so technically should not come undone.

I use a ball end collar pin which screws in and my tie pin goes into a closed end clasp with a catch so it can't pierce the shirt or skin or come undone. Have to say I do hate to see people without a tie and collar pin, think it's looks awful imo!

I use a plaiting or darning needle and find the 3rd stitch up on the Point Length, pierce there and match up with the other side. Wriggle the needle around a bit to make the hole bigger, then swap the needle for the collar pin.
