just want a little advice, my pony has been broken since last october, hes 4 this year,(he was backed and brought on walk and trot and has been hacking over winter) he is 3 weeks into his proper ridden work and doing fantastic for such a short period of time but he is evading the bit somewhat, he was going behind and above the bit alot that is settling and he does come into a beautiful outline for most of his schooling sessions but he is a beggar for opening his mouth all the time.
im sick of people suggesting a flash, why would i want to strap his mouth shut hes a baby.
im going to swap him to a french link loose rng snaffle to see if that assists in him quitting, hes in a eggbut jointed at the min as thats what hes always been in.
he is ridden without any gadgets or gizmos and is schooled for about half an hour a day or hacked.
he doesnt need his back doing (been done), i can get his teeth done thats no issue but i thought this mouth opening was more of an aversion rather than teeth issue.
im not doing the work with him hes away at the minute so im going up every weekend to check on his progress, its just very unsightly and with the show season fast approaching for him i would like to get this sorted.
thanks.

Sounds like he is coming on a treat. A lot don't like nutcracker action if a single joint, might have been ok to hack but now asking for contact might be getting him on the palette. I'd defo try a lozenge or French link, if he's backing off it I'd go for a lozenge. At his age being asked proper work teeth being regularly checked if say is a must. I personally hate flash straps and with a lot of ignoring I have worked my baby through that stage. I don't think you can have a four year old staying in a consistent contact, I think you're pony is doing well at the moment.

Yes that's what I thought thanks for your reply. I'm off up at weekend so will try a couple of different bits with him. I cannot fault him on anything else he's an absolute gem and taken to it like a duck to water I just don't want it becoming a habit. I've booked him in for his teeth done after the Easter weekend. Im sure it's just a baby issue it's only been 2 and a half weeks really of proper work with his rest days. Just unsightly watching him work lovely with his trap open
