I haven't ridden my Fell in his pelham recently but used it yesterday at a show. He was very tense in the jaw and kept crossing it and sticking his tongue out. It's not evasive, just seemed uncomfortable to him. He does quite often do it in the line up maybe a stress thing? The pelham is a small ported one. He has always gone quite well in this but recently I have been working really hard on his flatwork to do more dressage - its taken a VERY long time but he is now going beautifully in a jeffries loose ring revolver snaffle and cavesson noseband - with very little jaw tenseness. I don't want to spoil this lovely softness by using the pelham in the showring - has anyone got any suggestions of what to use? Maybe a different pelham type or a double bridle bearing in mind he has a small mouth and fleshy tongue. I have decided to focus on dressage with him but would like to do a bit of showing still. Thanks for reading!

Our fell hates his pelham, he is ridden in a twisted snaffle at home so we decided to ride him in a double using his snaffle and ride off that reign- he goes just as well as he does when he is ridden just in his snaffle.

I think may be my best move too although finding a suitable bradoon might be a prob. Thanks for replying.

My fell is incredibly fussy with what I put in his mouth, it always seemed he was happy in one thing for a while and then he threw his toys out of his pram! I struggles with any bit whether it be a pelham or snaffle, tried various double combos but found his mouth too small and tongue too big to accomodate two bits. After what seemed like forever he is happily going in two bits. One is the bomber happy tongue loose ring snaffle and the other is the Neue Schile warmblood pelham. Both have loads of tongue relief and he loves them both. I found that he just hated any tongue pressue and I think it is a common problem with natives as they tend to have big fleshy tongues and small mouths. My pony is very well schooled and incredibly light in his mouth so I knew instantly if he wasn't happy with his bit. Both of the bits I have were expensive but I trialled them through the bit bank first and they have proved to be money very well spent.

I think it is trial and error. My Dales is happier in a Pelham than a double. I have a sweet iron with a lozenge, we use the same for his snaffle as well.

I rode a fell in a double just on the snaffle rein, but he found it quite a lot in his mouth and would sometimes open his mouth so I had to be careful

Another vote for the neue Schule Warmblood Pelham - I use this on my TB with a fleshy tongue and small Mouth, with a standard Pelham he would resist and open his mouth, with this he relaxes and goes beautifully.
