Hi my 5 year old welsh p/b began his ridden work with a nice soft outline but was not going forward/ engaging from behind, now he is more forward/tracking up but has lost his outline. He will become light in the hand for a few strides but not consistently, I know he is only young and I am not in a rush just looking for any tips/advice. Will lungeing help as I feel it may be the muscles that need developing any advice appreciated thanks

If he is now forward I would slow the pace and work him a bit longer and lower(not over bent -pushing forward), also start flexion work to loosen his neck. Both will lead to you being able to place his head/ neck where you want it to be.

Once you have him working properly from behind (lots of transitions, lateral work, changes of bend etc) without worrying about the head position, he will drop naturally onto the bit in a correct outline.
