We have a pony who is struggling to round, has a hard mouth and struggles to relax her poll. On examination the bars of her mouth are very fleshy. Has anyone experience of this and found a bit or mouthpiece to help.

we had a new forest mare with a very fleshy mouth. we found a curved mouthpiece worked best, either a solid bar with a very wide shallow port, or the shaped mouthpiece snaffles with a lozenge/french link centre

Just asking, but is it actually a bit problem or a schooling problem? If working correctly from behind it should come. Another possibility could be that if the pony is thick through the throat she will find it physically difficult to flex whatever you do, so best to treat with tact and only ask for short periods and then let her have a longer outline as a reward.

I agree with sarahp, but I suggest that the first thing in any situation is to make sure the horse or pony is totally comfortable! I had a real problem some years ago with mare, with a fleshy mouth - I read an article on The Bit Bank website, and having thought I knew a reasonable amount about bits and fitting, I realised how little I knew lol!! Do have a look and ring them, they are very knowledgeable and most helpful. They will send you any number of bits to try, in my opinion the Neue Schule verdiband are streets ahead on anything else I have tried with the angle and fit of the mouth piece etc, but it is a case of - 'what works for you'!! Are you quite sure that the saddle isn't pinching and is totally comfortable and the girth too by the way? These can make a huge difference too, with the outline of the pony being hollow. Hope this helps

was a bit dazed and confused last night and couldn't remember the name Neue Schule, it was their curved snaffle that worked, they are lovely kind bits. Our dentist said her mouth was extremely fleshy but this worked fine and she seemed really happy and comfortable. When we first had her she went nicely in a little magic bit too, which was quite thin with a very shallow port
