Hi
I know this topic of saddles for wide backed natives will have been done to death and I have done alot of googling but the suggestions all seem to cost alot of £££!
My 4yo Section A is a really old fashioned type, basically a mini cob with a flat back and no withers. I got her a thorowgood saddle for backing but didn't realise it wasn't an adjustable gullet model so will have to sell it on. She's being backed atm bareback which is actually easier as she's being backed by a light adult however she will need a saddle. I don't have a full time rider for her so I don't want to spend hundreds on an expensive saddle just now until I find something more permanent for her ridden career but it would be nice for her current rider to take her to some walk and trot dressage tests etc.
Any ideas what I should be looking out for on ebay etc? General consenus says a treeless saddle but for the price of a good one I'd be better investing in a native pony saddle company (will probably get one of these further down the line).
Many Thanks!

Thanks Jenna! I've seen a few of these on ebay and they look smart. Wasn't sure how someone would cope doing dressage in one but it may be the best solution for now.

If it's any help I had the same problem with my Dartmoor and I was very sceptical about the Thorn but it was a last resort before going down the made to measure route. It was the best choice I've ever made saddle wise, my pony is going the best he's ever gone, no tensing issues and no saddle slipping forward. My daughter who's only 5ft rides him and she loves it, I got the Thorn Deluxe Plus Saddle Pad which has a knee roll for jumping so it's like an all round saddle. I also bought stirrup leathers and a girth and the leather is fantastic, I bought a full leather one, it's most definitely worth the money and a lot less than a made to measure.

I was also going to suggest a Thorn pad, but don't think I need to now!

Oh great reviews! Thank you all so much! Will definitely make a purchase then. What size of girth do you get for it? The thorowgood needed a really long girth as the straps were so short!

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Amanda that makes them will ask for the measurement of the girth right round of the pony and she will make a girth to suit the measurement. Definitely worth paying extra for. Sent from my GT-I9505 using proboards

She fitted my 16h horses girth but it was the wrong shape so a made to measure girth will be best. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

I have a thorn saddle for my fell, having tried native pony, ideal and many other makes, and spent a fortune on Physio, the thorn is great and it doesn't move!! My only criticism was that I had to have new girth straps because the ones on it were not good enough leather, other than that I just wish I had got one sooner!

Were your girth straps not strengthened with webbing? They are on my recently bought one but maybe it's a new thing. Sent from my GT-I9505 using proboards

They were leather, stitched to webbing, but the actual leather for the girth straps was not great quality, and when my naughty exmoor had a bucking bonanza, the girth straps snapped and the saddle and I both ended up on the deck !!! Other than that, saddle fabulous.
