Just wonder how many of all you dog lovers out there have any idea how good or otherwise the food you feed is for your dogs?? Have a look at this website : www.allaboutdogfood.co.uk It was passed on to me a while ago, and I found it extremely helpful. Since changing the food of all my dogs, I have noticed a huge improvement in all sorts of ways, including coat quality and shine, better teeth, quieter ( less hypo ) and have saved a lot of money, as by feeding a better quality, I can feed less and in turn it is more economical. I was horrified to see the rubbish that is included in some of the well known and 'not cheap' feeds. I dread to think what is in some of the supermarket 'own' brands!! I hope you find it good too!!

We used to feed Royal Canin Mini Junior/Adult but when we got the dobermann we changed to Skinners Field & Trial Maintenance. We have all our dogs on this now. Min pins & pugs, they all look fabulous.

Thats interesting Philippa, have you had a look at the analysis on 'all about dog food' web site? I was amazed at how well my dogs looked on the food i was feeding too, but when I changed to a 'better' food, (no more expensive!) I realised how much better still they could have been !! I guess it depends on how much goes on, on the inside that doesn't show altogether just through the coat etc!!

TBH I couldn't really work it out, I know the skinners is a third the price of the Royal Canin!!!!

My husband only feeds out the BARF method (Bones and Raw Food) he is a real disciple of the book! However we have just got a rescue Wire haired pointer bit*h who is a year old and so skinny. She loves her food but obviously we cannot pump it into her so gradual build up. She is very poorly developed muscle wise and spent most of her time in a cage so I want to give her some food to help her to gain weight and muscle developmement to go with the raw meat etc. Any suggestions? Just got some Eukeneuba puppy food to add which has calcium and other supplements so will see. Her coat is really shiny and she is otherwise healthy but just looks so skinny bless her.

Personally and purely because we've used it for a long time with very good results I'd use Royal Canin mini junior. Very palatable dry or soaked.
My mum feeds raw too. Poo's stink!!!!! Lol

i use arden grange
we used to feed beta [spaniels]....but since swapping - their poo's are smaller, look healthier and my older collies bloods are back at normal range compared to abnormal on beta - im convinced it was the bad feed due to the amount of crap in beta/processed/foods
i wouldnt feed raw as its not for us - but i wouldnt ever feed anything but more natural foods - arden/james wellbeloved etc :]

Interesting Phillipa as we find the opposite! Raw food seems to produce less poo and certainly harder - but I guess it will depend on what they get fed! I personally hate the smell of tripe! Apparantly OH has now found some natural cereal mix which he has ordered, has to be soaked and can sprout!!!! Looking forward to a kitchen full of this - NOT!!! Sounds like Fast Fibre without the sprouting!! Judt hope it doesn't produce sprouting (or gas) at the other end!!!!

lovely topic!! We have a Dauschund (standard, smooth coated). He's fed "Royal Canin" (the breed specific one) but we do have to change after every bag as he stops eating/gets sick of it so we alternate with "Science Plan" However i must admit he also gets the odd custard cream on the side He does look really good on this and we get lots of comments and people stopping us and asking what he is fed - His coat is gleaming, it's interesting to see what others think.

Hello! Sarah1! I looked to see who you were as you 'liked' a post regarding jumping training/ WHP and found this post! My Dachshund (Minature, very small, also smooth haired) has chicken. That's it. My previous one from the same Breeder, also lived on chicken as her Breeders boil it for their puppies. Unfortunately I can't stand the smell - so this is lightly roasted. Skin & fatty lumps cut off before cooking. She looks stunning on it and my Vets are very complementary about her condition. I'm surprised the humans haven't started clucking as a lot of chicken gets eaten in this house! Her other fave food is CABBAGE and she will even steal it from the sheep's trough (I have tups going to a pedigree sale soon). Just reading this thread, this diet combination produces a decent portable poo a day. Any deviation from her chicken & cabbage diet and her calling card is not so pleasant . . . .

My collies always have Arden Grange, it is hypoallergenic,no chemicals and they live longer and healthier. It is the best feed, according to my friend, w ho has worked in pet trade over 40 years.

Wow Caoline - cabbage! Thats a new one on me - might see if he likes it - he does love carrotts(raw) and steals them whilst i'm making the horses feed! He just gets so sick of the dried food that he stops eating it at times which isn't like him as he does like his food! Very interesting about the chicken - i think my boy may be due a change

I have had two lurchers renowned for their poor digestion, and having gone through every type of dog food trying to find a balance on cost and quality with a little disturbance to their bowels as possible. My vote is with Arden Grange which I buy in 12kg sacks but if I run out I can get it from Waitrose. I now have RottieX who came with her own food cheaper when I got her, she hummed to high heaven, on the Arden Grange no smell. I do worry about feeding dogs only meat they are omnivores and will eat fruit and veg. The local fox has given himself a nasty case of the runs eating next doors fallen plums.

I have put my puppies Cocker Spaniels, 2 litters at the mo!! on Eden food. It has no cereals, but meat and veg and fruit in a dry kibble, which for the little ones I soak and mash. It is amazingly good, and I have bred lots of puppies over the years ( just a hobby lol!! ) These are the best yet! Available on line, and very fast delivery. I highly recommend this food!

I'm glad I came across this post as I was just going to ask any experiences on dog food. Not had a look at the website yet but am interesting in hearing anyone's experiences of feeding a hyper dog. Our 17 month old lab has been on the Chudley's range from getting her at 8 weeks from puppy variety to adult. She is very exuberant in her personality and never runs out of energy, although once settled in the house she chills out. She has been on the sensitive variety for a while as she does suffer from the aforementioned fkatulence! Made a huge mistake before I went away, forgetting to go to feed merchant I bought a bag of Pedigree, came back a week later to a hyper, total lunatic on springs! Obviously, I have gone back to her previous food! Has anyone any recommendations on alternatives to Chudley's? She does well on it and is fit and healthy but would be interested to hear of alternatives for a calmer dog! She's a pet, not a working dog - she'd be hopeless, scared of water and loud noises!
I saw a tv programme about what's in dog food a while back and was mortified by the rubbish, additives and colourings in dog food. It seems the more colourful the food, the worse it is!

All my dogs are completely changed, in lots of different ways since I put them on CSJ food - Tripe Variety. It is a dry food and doesn't smell at all - they love it and as I have 6 Cocker Spaniels Show type, to say they have quietened down, stopped eating other dogs poo ( YUCK!!!) and one of them has a tendency to be a bit nervy - she is a different dog. It is available in a lot of pet shops, but if any probe on line ordering is available and very efficient. I would def try it Karen, I am soooo impressed with it !!

Thanks for that, I will see if I can find a local supplier and look online. Mine gets lots of exercise, she has boundless energy and a total inability to listen! A little calmer would be nice................!
