I've just been browsing a respected website selling horses & ponies and I have to say that the number of 'top class' 'HOYS potential' adverts for clearly not quite the grade horses and ponies is unbelievable.
I've been on the hunt for a 'top class' pony and have found it quite by chance on here. No elaborate advert.
It just annoys me when I see 3 legged dogs advertised as HOYS ponies. It's about time people stopped pulling the wool over their own eyes let alone other peoples!!!
Sorry, rant over.

I agree with you philippa. Everyone these days seems to have a potential HOYS pony or horse. Im afraid Im a bit the other way when Im selling any of mine. I seem to tell everyone about things that don't really matter but I think need pointing out lol. I would rather be totally honest and get a good home than bigging up my ponies just to get a good price! I am the first to point out whats wrong with my ponies - if there is anything. I have bred some beautiful ponies but I would never be so vain as to say my ponies are HOYS potential unless they have proved they can get to that level in the first place.
Ive ranted too now lol.

Absolutely..... I look at mine sometimes and their weaknesses stand out to me far more than their good points. I would say I tend to be harsher on my own than others lol :-) every pony nowadays seems to have hoys quality written on the advert. I think it is important to be upfront when selling so you know your pony is going on to a good home

I agree finding a suitable good home (rider), for any horse and it's ability and potential, far more weighs up than price.

Some of the ponies described as Hoys potential are laughable (and the price they want ) there are probably lots of ponies around quality enough but it's having the skill to bring out that potential . I have to say browsing a certain well known for sale site there wasn't much that stood out to me Hoys potential or not . I think the right pony will come along for us at some point but not in a hurry as my daughter has a pony to ride she would just like one with longer legs to do workers on as her shetland not really up to jumping the height my daughter wants to , though she does try lol .

Nice to read others are the same as me, it feels like you're the only honest seller out there. I'm a bit sick and tired of friends telling me I'm my own worse enemy while trying to sell our mare.... GUILTY and I wont change I've definitely put most of them off. I underplay the good and overplay the bad!! I havent claimed shes HOY's potential even though shes faired well in qualifiers because she hasnt got there 'yet' I've even managed to put off one buyer and suggested another type of pony to them altogether which they went out and bought!!! They did get in touch to thank me for the advise though Having said all that its also soul destroying being the seller, I've had dealers pretending not to be dealers, disillusioned buyers with cash who think their pampered 'Tiffany' just off a Shetland would be fine with a 14.2 Kilvington Scoundrel mare ''Errrr no'' People lie just as much when buying as they do selling!!

Ain't that the truth maxandpaddy! Normally I've found in the area of leading you to believe they're more experienced than they really are. Mind you I've had two lots of really nice people last week, one lot bought the pony and I have great hopes of them getting to HOYS with him, they know their stuff and I consider the pony good enough, and the other lot rang on the off chance, loved the pony but we found we had had a genuine misunderstanding re the price I was looking for. It was lovely to see the pony behaving like an complete angel though!
On the other hand, one I confidentally let go out on loan with a view to buy came back, not because of anything he did, but because they didn't seem to understand that a pony needs to get used to a strange place (and with no equine company around, something that had never happened to him before) and child and pony need to get used to each other. Or that when we said he needed to wear an anti-midge rug we meant it! That appears to have been a case of them leading us to believe they were more experienced than the were.

I agree Philippa I like a trawl of the adverts and am seeing this all the time. It doesn't help when a site has a section for HOYS qualified ponies but allows adverts in that section for ponies that have not ever qualified - perhaps they need a 'wishful thinking' section!
If it's not ' HOYS quality' it's 'stunning' (Now there is a word that is woefully over used!)
What the whole thing does show though is that HOYS has become the be all and end all for so many, we see again and again top shows where a class win is simply seen as a qualification rather than a great class win at a famous county show and in a way that's quite sad

I'd love a 'Wishful thinking' section hahaaaa for buyers and sellers I upset someone by saying there was no point in coming over to see our mare as I didnt think she would be suitable for them Big Mistake...Huge!!! I was then lectured over the phone for 10 minutes about what a 'thuper little wider' she was, the fact that they'd never owned a pony before, the girl was only 10 'but vewy tall' and they honestly asked if she'd be ok to do pony games/gymkhana kind of ruled them out!!! I'l give in trying soon, I've said I'l give it one more month but if we dont find her a good home within that time, Hannah will have to have her feet chopped off for next season

Grumpy old woman hat on today, but I do so agree with harrypatch about qualifications being the only thing that matters these days, so decreasing the status of the county shows and the like. My boy won at the last RASE show, he'd already qualified but I'd always wanted to win at the Royal. I was very sad when they introduced a HOYS Q at RWAS, as I love the ridden C and D classes there with a ride judge and now worry about their long term viability, especially as they have been moved to Monday which can make it difficult to do unless you're local because of the stabling costs.
maxandpaddy, you gave me a thought re pricing when reading your post. I don't know your pony, and this is not personal but general, but in this sort of market, do you think we have lost the price/quality relationship for ponies? If vendors have to reduce their price expectations for a quality pony to a run of the mill pony price, how do you attract the buyers your good pony deserves? Personally I do have the choice as I have the land, and ponies like the angel I mentioned above can stay here in the field if I can't get a fair (and not OTT) price for her.

Totally agree with u sarahp, I've lowered the price so much on our mare in the hope of finding her a good home that I'm not only hugely out of pocket but I'm sure its actually putting people off!! I cant win We've had a lot of interest but again maybe its the price thats attracting the 'numpties' and keeping away the decent homes? This thread springs to mind reading this one horsegossip.proboards.com/thread/169211/sale-ads-mean

Yeap!! Sick and tired of seeing it all the time and some of these ponies are NOT hoys quality let alone even some riding club standard!! I advertised my hack not long ago and yes he is hoys quality as he been there since a 4 year old but I didn't put it in my ad that he was but what I did put in my ad was the honest truth of temperament and what the horse was like, I did this with my welsh mare I sold too, I did advertise him for a good price for what he is I advertised him at night he had sold by the morning and then I had people offering me more money than I had sold him for! So to me people after that I think people prefer to see honest ads and not a bag of lies how you have no time and cant do it justice but is a top hoys quality. Just my opinion anyway.

I have a very nice Highland pony for sale, he has good confirmation and adheres to the breed standard so you could show him and depending on the level would probably qualify for something but he not a HOYS pony. I have had no enquiries off his advert off here. Now whether no one likes the look of him fair enough, but the top ponies are perhaps the top 10% and then they have to be schooled and produced to perfection so does no one want the other 90%-95%? Producing and pony capable of being placed at the highest level takes time and experience, even though I have bought and schooled ponies for years I know unless I had a really outstanding pony I am not in that bracket.

Good grief ...this is what I have to put up with from HQ
JLS just beat her to the final of X Factor ...tough competition but the judge preferred Astons 6 pack Yes she will travel on the back seat but needs a booster She's COLOUR BLIND SO PROBABLY WONT NOTICE THE MASSEY HAS CHANGED! Would easily qualify for BGT...she juggles, mimes and can spit a conditioning cube 20 foot

Sorry I needs to return it for a full refund. It spooked at a Case Tractor and a Fendt Tractor as well. Absolutely not what it said on the tin. Also at the show it only got 49/50 for conf and show.

I would get her professional lessons. If you say no I will react as you will be being very unreasonable!!!

It really pays to be honest with your add! Ive just sold a pony on here with a detailed truthful advert (explaining he had a large crest and was the lami type of pony etc) i put 5 good pictures showing all angles of him and the versatility of the pony to go with it and he sold to the 1st to view him within 36 hours of writing the advert! Pony sold to the best home ever also! Putting hoys quality if its not just wastes everybodys time and is pointless! People should just tell the truth!

I am amazed at how trying it is selling ponies these days. My grandfather was a highly reputable horsedealer who made a living honestly selling all sorts of horses and ponies. I have always applied his open and honest approach when buying and selling, until the last few years this has always worked. Recent experience has so disappointed me. Good, quality, honest, successful ponies priced to suit their c.v. and potential tried by endless time wasters. I have had the last laugh with most who have gone on to do brilliantly, with fantastic owners.... but the process is extremely trying!

Maybe they read enough posts about facey judging and believe that any horse or pony with the right rider/judge combination can qualify for HOYs.

What is a Hoys pony anyway? 15 years ago, I bought a 14.2 camel, well he was supposed to be a show pony, but he could claim that in NAME only! He had scars, he had a camel hump wither, a big head, absolutely no movement what so ever, the reason I bought this monstrosity, was he was Safe!! I got on, and instantly fell for this ugly beast! My dad smiled and agreed a price with the seller! Mum had this horrified look on her face, asking me on the way home, what exactly is she supposed to do with this pony! We took said pony home, and I proudly brought him into the arena, and mum and her friend laughed at this pony!! Now I loved this pony, rode him every day, and bit by bit, we improved him, ok we couldn't get rid of his scars or his camel hump wither, but what I did find, locked inside, was the most outstanding movement I had ever seen in a show pony! This ugly beast slowly turned into a beautifully schooled, well mannered pony, who consistently did good shows, and judge after judge was wowed by his movement! This pony, regularly qualified RIHS and Hoys!! How you ask! Because of the hard work, time and production of this pony! Now if I was to write this ponies ad to sell!! It would read like this! 14.2 chestnut gelding! Aged! Has been shown at the highest level! This super steady, safe pony, is the ultimate confidence giver. Would suit, nervous, frail, or lazy rider, as needs no working in before his class! Consistently brings home happy rider, and happy family after each show! A pleasure pony in every way! Is grumpy in stable at dinner time! And does need shoes all round! 100% to catch, load! clip etc. sadly 15 yrs on, many Hoys ponies, aren't necessary the best ponies, they are the ponies that get money thrown at them, to produce and travel to EVERY Hoys qualifier! The moral of my story is, please don't look at a picture of a pony, and decide that ponies fate, Buyers. And sellers, be more honest about your horse, if it's ugly, don't try telling everyone it's stunning, when clearly it's not! I know this is a long thread, but I wanted to tell the story of my ugly show pony! Who really was the apple of my eye! And yes I was super lucky to actually qualify for Hoys
