Had a wonderful day out at Suffolk County Show yesterday - the weather was good, the rings were well organised and it was a pleasure to be out competing for the first time this year with one of our foals.
We took Persephone Heights (by Golden Heights) in the Hack & Riding Horse Mare, Gelding & Stallion 4 Yrs & Over and were thrilled when she was pulled in 3rd behind some very high class horses. We were even more delighted when our foal, Future Perfect Illusion, by our stallion Future Illusion (if you hadn't already guessed that bit! ), was picked out first as the Hack & Riding Foal. He's the first foal one the photos above...
We then went in the Sport Horse Broodmare & Foal, where Persephone Heights was pulled in 2nd behind a very nice dark bay mare, but Perfect Illusion went one better and won the Sport Horse Foal class.
With a 2nd placed broodmare and a 1st place foal qualified for the Championship we didn't think we had the remotest hope of getting any more ribbons given the high standard of the Yearlings, 2 Yr Olds and 3 Yr Olds, and seriously contemplated packing up and going home as it had already been a long day for our foal who was starting to flag. The classes moved through quite quickly so we decided to wait and we were really glad we did, when the judge called in Perfect Illusion as his Reserve Champion Sport Horse! Moggy Hennessy had a super 2 yr old filly that took the Championship and we were really pleased to have been runner-up to such an esteemed professional! We were just stunned that he'd seriously considered our foal and he commented to us that he almost never put up a foal in the Championship. It was lovely that he then spoke to us for a little while about how he was bred and how our stallion had improved the foal over its mother. It was one of the nicest experiences I've had in a show ring where a judge has taken a genuine interest in your horse rather than just handing out rosettes as quickly as they can!
To cap it off both my mare and foal loaded, travelled and unloaded really well and we all came away with minimal bumps and bruises and 2 happy and healthy horses. That's what I call a great day out!
