I too carry a whip when riding out, but never to hit the horse.. more so to hit the windowscreens of passing cars.. that go pasted us..inches away and far to fat! I have seen people young and old hit their mounts, because of some misdamina in the ring. ~As a committee member of my local riding club.. I have fronted up to these people. Yes I have been shouted down.. but I always stand by what I have said and seen.. if they don't like it themn they don't have to attend our shows.

My son hit his pony once for being naughty, and I went bonkers at him. I dont mind them carrying a stick, as the quiet ponies goes more forward, just knowing its there. They know better than to ever use it as a weapon!
The adults/parents should be blamed for not educating thier children, in the correct use of a stick and how NEVER to abuse it.

I always carry a stick when riding on roads just in case, and I carry a showing cane in hand but that really is for show. I do take a driving whip as I am teaching my boy to drive so I use it when long reining but I only lay it on his bum as a back up to my voice.

I carry a schooling whop when i school, and a short whip when im out hacking, although it only gets used when it needs to be, i have always been taught not to use it unless necessary
What gets me really angry is when people saw at the horses mouth just to get them on the bit???
I was in an equatation class last year and there was a girl next to me in the line up was sawing at the ponys mouth trying to get its head in, because th pony didnt like it he was throwing its head up and she got very angry and stated battering it everytime it threw its head up, needless to say i nearly got off and batterd her myself!!! xx

Theres nothing wrong with having a flash or a grackle on! however iam opposed to children or teens using spurs i only like to see them for show in the ring as part of the correct attire! i hate to see pieces of rubber hose pipe used as a whip to batter horses which i have seen a lot of. And a pet hate of mine is seeing children or adults constantly nagging/kicking with their legs at a ponies sides for one one it WILL make the pony/horse dead to the leg and would you like to be constantly kicked in the side i sometimes think it more cruel than anythin? If a pony or horse doesn't listen with a squeeze of the leg , first, then you back it up with a small tap behind the leg !

I also hate kicking on every stride but it seems to be the fashionable way of riding to be niggling all the time. A very successful M & M rider rides like this all the time and personally I think it looks absolutely awful and don't know why she wins so much.

We were selling a lovely very well schooled Cob a few years ago and one girl(16yrs old) who came to try him rode like that. Everytime she went into trot she kicked on every stride & he went straight into canter. I kept telling her to come back to walk and try again - without kicking, he only needed the slightest squeeze. On the umpteenth time of this happening I asked her why she kept kicking, the reply was a classic "I don't,my legs just do it on their own"

the riding school my daughter went to gave her a whip as soon as she wasnt lead any more when we bought her pony he was dead to the leg, as he was ex-riding school, its taken a long time to re-train both of them, but it can be done ;D I always carry a jumping whip, though have never used it on mine, I stick it out at 90 degrees when hacking on the roads as I've had my ankles knocked by so many wing mirrors I get funny looks but my ankles are fine now ;D

i always carry a whip in the school on the road at shows the reason for this is simply because these animals are much stronger and can be very drangerous even the best ones now i am not saying that those brats out there are useing the whips and spurs right but there are times when you need to use your whip people who just shout and ball at there horses i find dont get anywere but making there horses nervous they do need a smack now and then to keep them in place i mean lets face i have had my share of very bad horses were owners who have let there horses walk all over them it cant happen they are to big. i am not for or against using whips for people who say there is apsolutly no reason for using a whip i think is stupidity i dont go and smack my horses as they are very well meanered and very reasponsive but again i think it is all down to respect i give to them and they give to me yes they do have a smack when and only when they deserve it !

guestey I think I know who you're talking about!!!!!!! Looks awful - kicking on every stride is only pushing them out of their own natural stride and looks messy and hurried. If you don't know how to ask for a bigger trot properly then ask someone to teach you!

Having seen some brats who i would like to pull from their mounts i have seen some adults who i would like to do the same, having watched several showing classes OMG i think judges should just ask them to leave the ring. There is a time and reason to use whips or spurs but in the wrong hands my blood boils.!

There is an old horseman's saying - "a spur in the head is worth two on the heels"........................
As a judge, I would love to take the whips out of the hands of many a WHP jockey.
As a trainer, I teach them to think and ride forwards. Quite often, a rider will hold the hand with the whip in it, much more stiffly than the other hand. Gives a mixed message to the pony.
That said, I do believe that a rider needs to learn to carry a whip (and can therefore cope with something else as well as the rein in the hand).
My other personal bugbear are riders who say:-ssssssssshhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, or brrrrrrrrrrrrrrr to their poor pony, when asking (asking??) it to gallop (in its show) or jump etc.
Whatever happened to good old voice commands?

I only carry a whip if I think I'm going to need it - when I'm schooling my friend's very foward-going pony then I don't bother. However, the cob I ride often needs a small tap behind the leg to back up the leg aids (he is possibly the most lazy and ignorant horse to exist - still love him though!!). Whenever I'm hacking I tend to carry a whip because the horse I normally ride has a tendancy to nap and I'd rather be able to give him a small tap as a reminder to listen to me than find myself being pulled around by him. I hate seeing people hit their ponies for no reason though. The other one that really bugs me is when people smack their ponies as they go through the gate into a showjumping ring - it's so dangerous for the people standing nearby as many horses kick out.
As for spurs - hate to see them used unless it's really neccessary!! I think it's awful when you see horses with big cuts on their sides where they've been constantly kicked with spurs.

I always carry a whip with my horse, she would just plant her feet and refuse to go out if i didnt, she would nap at every given opportunity if i took her out on her own, and yes she has had it across her backend, she is naughty on her own, i have only ever given her a good tap on the backend with it and it works i could sit and use my legs and voice all day but if she is determined it isnt going to work, i only really need to raise the whip these days and she behaves, but even when i ride and lead so she has her mate for company she is still a cow! only time she behaves is when she has a pony in front, thats fine, but i dont have that luxury in the week!!

normally I just lurk on here but we have popped to a local show to take our youngster out, was amazed to see - the junior equitation top 2 riders (children must have been around 12/13 years old) all had spurs on!!
this happened at the last show at the same local riding club - different rider - the top child in equitation class again in spurs
different judge both times but I believe that they both are Pony club officials
is there anyone else who feels disgusted as I do?

To be honest I don't rate Pony Clubbers at all after being a member as a child and used to get so annoyed by all the kids in the teams ramming strong bits in their ponies mouths and massive spurs when they didn't know how to ride properly so I wouldn't think that an 'official' would see anything wrong with it!!!

Pony Clubbers are only allowed to use spurs if they have passed their B test, or with the signature of their DC. But, of course, that only helps if it's a PC competition. I too was at a local riding club event recently, watching a child continually smacking it's pony down the shoulder - not at any particular time, or for any particular reason, it just seemed to be a habit. Let's hope the pony develops a habit too!!

no kids should be allowed spurs, especially the horrid little brats i see with unnecessary gags, martingales and god knows what else..grrr!! i hope their ponies get pee'd off 1 day and put them where they deserve to be... on the deck!!! i put spurs on if jumping my mare, which is about once a year at the most if im feeling brave!! she has a nasty stop in her, if she knows i have them on she will jump anything, dont have to use them, just a slight squeeze before we go in the ring and off we go...then i can take them off for the jump off!!!!

How old are you to do a B test? I wasn't a favourite in my PC because one of the head instructors wanted my boy for her riding school and I wouldn't let her have him - too good for that and I was really into my showing and dressage from the age of 7 and there was more support for things like tetrathlon back when I was a member. I didn't put a pair of spurs on until I was 18 on my RH on the last day of PUK champs and she was getting a bit tired. I have never understood the concept of children having strong bits and spurs? You want your pony to move forward but yet socking it in the gob???

Perhaps that's an alternative method of 'between hand and leg' !!
But seriously, you can't generalise - that's why in PC it's at the discretion of the kid's DC - they know the child (hopefully) and their pony.
The problem these days is that a lot of children do not have knowledgable horsey parents - ponies are more widely owned than they were 30 years ago - most kids having ponies then had parents who had also ridden, so would pass on methods & knowledge. If you want to blame someone try some of the wonderful AI's out there - they think they're Gods, but, at the end of the day, they're only ASSISTANT instructors!!

i don't think first ridden ponies should need to use whips or spurs - if a pony needs spurs, surely it doesn't fit the class, as they are supposed to be gentle and well mannered, and able to go on voice and leg commands? i think you need a whip for hacking though, you never know how it might come in useful (i use mine on brambles and dangling branches )

some are good!! defo wouldnt say all think they're god!! i think mostly its the parents to blame, i.e the ones who are not knowledgable and go and buy ponies not having a clue, they copy others and think theyre doing the right thing...as an example...how many more ponies are crippled with lammy these days since owning ponies became more accessible and popular??? nothing to do with riding i know, but is true and a good example of the lack of knowledge! it scares me when these types of folk come to view ponies, i turn them away if i dont think they have the help to support them.

well im not proudof it but my friends child is rather a bit spoiled, she rides well and knows right from wrong when using a whip etc. Well said child was riding horse and having disagreement with mother at the same time, because said child did not win the argument she whipped her horse so hard it jumped and turned round to ride off. i grabbed the whip off her and shouted ' get off that bl**dy horse now before i drag you off, you should know better!' i then made her take her horse back to its stable and untack it. her mum looked on in amusement! luckily i get on with her cosid hate to think what anyone else would say! she was 13 years old but it taught her a lesson and i would do it again, and again. there is no excuse for it, its all very well saying something behind there backs but if no one does anything about it then its going to happen again and again
