Wondered if anyone had any bitting (or other) suggestions for a very strong pony (only when hunting or pleasure rides - otherwise he's always in a snaffle). He's well schooled, obedient to aids and not at all strong except in company as above. He jogs a lot which isn't a problem at all but grips the bit, sticks his head down and yanks the reins which is. My sons a good rider and can cope with strong ponies but the head down and yanking is starting to affect his enjoyment. Any help/comments gratefully received.

This depends very much on temperament, stop, rein back, walk on. If space us available turn in tiny circle giving with the rein. It would work with two of mine but the rein back bit would fizz the third (Welsh lol) up!

We have a similar issue with my friends horse, we are focusing our hacking on him being able to walk whilst the one, two or all three of us trot or canter away and then wait for them to catch up. At first he went bonkers but now he is starting to deal with it and understand that it's ok to be left as he will catch up eventually. Hope fully it will help with him being strong in a group situation. My friend has tried many strong bits but he just sets his neck against them and goes.

I have a very strong pony in canter so I have tried a type of myler combination bit with the string over the nose and this has really helped, I now have some brakes when cantering on rides.

We had a pony that used to grab the bit and wrench the reins away, then would take off! We put her in a cherry roller loose ring. She no longer grabbed it as the rollers moved and she couldn't get it. Was a pleasure to hunt, we didn't ride her in it at home only to hunt, normal snaffle at home x
