I have a horse was diagnosed with hind gut ulcers in 2012. He colicked nine times that year and had never colicked before. My horse has never done anything but the repeated colics but, if I'm paying attention he is good at giving me advance warning that he hurts.
I'm not sure when he developed the ulcers. He was diagnosed with Equine Metabolic syndrome in 2007. He was always a trail horse and the most stress in his life has been that he is the strong alpha leader. The vet feels the EMS brought on the colonic ulcers.
Besides a bland diet (I lost the article that said horses with hind gut ulcers should not have beet pulp but rice bran is ok, if they have trouble holding weight) the only thing that helps this horse is "Succeed".
www.succeed-equine.com/It costs ~$100/month. I tried taking him off and he tried to colic in less than 48 hours. He's been on Succeed for two years and will stay on it the rest of his life, unless something better comes along.
I know folks that have used Equishure but, he kept colicking during the short time he was on it.
shop.kerx.com/products/equishureYou might try it first, as it's half the price of "Succeed"; at least it was in 2012.
As an FYI, the vet is also suspicious my horse has strangulating lipomas. The ride to the Equine university is 4 hours in car, my horse is now 27, also has Equine Metabolic Syndrome so, the vet does not want to risk trailering him that far. At his age, there is nothing I can do anyway, except what I have been doing for the last two years; so far it's all working.
His diet is:
A grain and soy-free ration balancer
Rice bran
Flax
Kinetic Conquer for his arthritis
Remission for his EMS
Succeed for his colonic ulcers
Five pounds of well mushed timothy/alfala cubes 2X/day
Mixed grass hay (he comes in at night) that is locally grown
Daily turnout on 20 acres of pasture.
I have three other senior horses, so I keep plenty of Banamine in the refrigerator.
I hope this helps:)
