Anyone got any ideas how to stop this happening ? Rugs fit well but during the night they pull down very slightly andwear the base of the mane away and have made one of our horses sensertive there ( no sores or white hair showing) have used the ssame make of quality rugs for years before with no problems.

mine is the same, get some one to alter them and make a split about 2" long just where the rug sits on the wither, works a treat with mine.

I have one (IDx) who can only wear the rambo wug type. She will get sores on the top of her withers in any other rugs that I have tried.

She is in Premier Equine rugs but full neck ones, but the main rug which is a problem is a day rug without a neck ! will risk trying the 2 " split ;-) Glad i'm not the only one.

Last winter when my mare wore a rug against the everlasting rain she got rub areas on her withers and prominent parts of her pelvis and she has never had these before. I am thinking rugs cause more problems than they are worth!! Trying to avoid them when possible. Last week my mare had a brand new lightweight Horseware rug on and by the next morning a complete strap had fallen off because the stitching came apart.

Cut a slit as suggested then bind it with soft (silky) tape to stop fraying
