we are currently looking for some feedback regarding peoples opinions on stock for a country store due to open in the north west
what sort of products do people look for on a daily basis ? would you prefer an option of price ranges for the same product (i.e various brands of coat shine e.g supreme and gold label ) what other departments would you expect to see other than equine in a country store? do you think there is a market for a new store in the north west? how far would you travel for a good range of products with a range of prices? would you expect cafe facilities?
all thoughts welcomed.

Sorry OP we aren't really helping here. When I need something in a hurry it's usually show prep stuff which isn't readily available at most outlets round here although we have ponies on parade down the road and she is pretty good at keeping Supreme stuff in stock.
I find good quality pony products are only available on the net, people just don't cater for "show ponies" in store. That is across the range from tack to boots etc, I haven't yet seen a set of quality brushing boots small enough for my 12hh LR pony anywhere. Bridles are also a bone of contention, my ponies have "small pony" heads, NOT Shetland heads!!!!!
So a wide range of quality goods would be great.
As far as other country pursuits then yes that's a great idea but you need staff who are experienced in each field. I wouldn't want a fishing expert trying to sell me a gun!!!!!

I have worked in the industry plus am very close to a very good independent saddlery but it is very hard to buy showing tack or have a really good range of showing accessories anywhere without having to order online. However, the reason behind this is market led - stock can tie up thousands of pounds and as a result, it makes financial sense to stock what most people want. If that happens to be that local livery yards have loads of kids who want pink and diamante then the only sensible business decision is to stock this. What you stock really does depend on the area you are in - whether you have a large amount of studs, race yards, show yards, sj, event or leisure riders really will dictate what you need to stock and what other 'country persuits' are relevant. It is very easy to underestimate how much of a stock investment rugs and tack are and of course if you stock feed, it is perishable and customers are very good at chopping and changing so can lose a lot of money if not careful.
