Hi
I'm having trouble finding a saddle for my mare - she is very very wide but not flat backed. She is also quite short through her back (she is a traditional cob). All the saddles I have tried so far are wide enough but they bridge as the trees are too flat. Any ideas on makes that do saddles that might suit my mare? I don't want to mess around any more getting saddlers to come out that have nothing to suit. Thanks

I used to have an ideal wh which seemed slightly more curved in the tree

Do try a native pony saddle, or Mathew Lawrence comfort saddle. They are designed for native types, traditionals.

Can you go shorter in the seat size? If you fit curvier to go up the wither and croup as it were you can end up with rocking problems in trot and canter. You may just need to go smaller in the seat and possible closer contact with the flat tree to get the whole saddle lower. Backs can look curvy when a horse is standing, but then lift and flatten in work, if you fit a tree that looks perfect "in the cross ties" the chances are very high that, on a wide horse or native shape, the saddle will lift at the back in trot and canter. Bear in mind many many cases of bridging are caused by too narrow a tree or too mouch flocking in the front. I fit most traditionals in our very wide very flat cob tree, but our Phoenix Luxe WH probably goes on nearly as many, a deep seat on a curvier tree. Obviously I'm biased but you could do with having someone out who has a range of wide saddles with varying degrees of flatness.
