I know that the flydes and the native pony co saddles are still the thing 'to have' but my mare personally does not agree with them... and being 5ft nothing and owning a chestnut mare section D (welsh section dragon as fondly named) I find that its nice to have a more secure, higher backed, closer contact saddle. So I went to the extreme and bought an old type dressage saddle (birchwood, no knee roll and two tone brown, looks fine except the gaping girth!!) However am I ok to show in my dressage saddle and do working hunter in my monoflap jump? Also my second question, I would like to show my mare county level. What do I need to be registered with? I am NPS Area 20/7 but not registered with them. Do I need to register for NPS or anything else? I live bang smack next to windsor horse show, I do need to be NPS to compete there don't I? Many thanks

You can have different saddles for flat classes & WHP classes (but you cannot change your saddle between the jumping & the flat phase of WHP classes) & it is up to you what type of saddle fits/suits you and your animal, there are no "rules" about this item
It does depend on what classes you wish to enter at Royal Windsor.
If you wish to enter the M&M WHP, I believe this is an RIHS qualifier so you would need to be a member of NPS
The ridden M&M classes are Olympia qualifiers so you would need to be a member of BSPS to enter those
Hope this helps

Thankyou, I'll look into an BSPS as I am more likely to do flat And it also looks a little cheaper!! I was just panicking about the saddles! Glad its not frowned upon using them!

You can have the saddle girth straps shortened and then use an ordinary girth

If you are thinking of doing any HOYS qualifiers then you can join WPCS, BSPS, NPS, PUK or TSR - lots of choice

It's not really cheaper as you have to register your pony with them too, whereas NPS you just join personally A few people get the girth straps on their dressage saddle made shorter so they can use a standard girth and their saddle doesn't stand out as much.

There are Native Pony saddle and Native Pony saddles, just FYI - the company split in two nearly five years ago, one half I work for (definitely our of choice!) - www.ahsaddles.com and we have some really nice deep seated WH saddles which can fit some pretty flat backs. They are definitely very different to Fylde, different in construction (Fyldes have thin foam panels) and different in how they're fitted. The other brand, still called Native Pony, has mainly flat seated saddles. A proper old fashioned relatively minimal dressage saddle would be a pretty good option though

Thanks all! I have to say I do prefer the longer girth straps so I'll stick with it for the time being if its not going to be an issue!! Thanks Guestless - that's a good point, I didn't even think about that! I've shown before but never registered so I'm totally new to it. :L sbloom - its a shame I didn't know about them! I just bought a brand new mark todd charisma for jumping.. If I'd known before I might have tried them!! I'm so happy to have found my birchwood however, its really hard to find dressage saddles at the moment without huge knee rolls!

I'm not used to fastening dressage girths and it's probably not an issue but remember you will have to strip the pony for the conformation section of a ridden class so you want to be able to untack and retack quite quickly

I find its quicker, you don't have to flap about with saddle panels! I'm quite looking forward to this season now!
