My ancient terrier has an ulcerated lump on his ear which weeps and bleeds. The vet removed 2 of these lumps earlier in the year, but he now has more, the one on his ear is the worst. The vet suggested amputating his entire ear flap, but he is so old and frail, I refused. He doesn't seem to be bothered by it, it doesn't seem sore or itchy and he never rubs or scratches it.I have heard that Manuka honey is good for this type of thing, has anyone had a similar experience and used it ? How often should you apply it? Thanks

It was prescribed by the vet when a mare of mine cut her self, worked wonder's, and left no scar, but it was for veterinary use, not the sort you buy in the supermarket. I have also heard wonderful results when used on humans.

Also good results with it on a very nasty leg wound (horse) - my vet told me to buy the strongest one I could in the supermarket.

Thanks, I got the strongest one I could from the health food shop. I don't expect it to heal, but thought it might help to stop the weeping and the smell which is pretty awful, like human fungating tumours. How often do you apply it, do you know?

It is a while ago now, but I think I only dressed it every couple of days - it was in a easy to dress place, though. Not sure how you would cover it over on his ear, it would be important to stop him licking it off, as that could make it worse. Good luck!

Thank you Clifton, unfortunately I am not on Facebook but I will look on the internet about turmeric, I have heard about its use as a medicine so I will have a look. I have been putting the manuka on every 2 days, and must say it is definitely not as smelly, so I will carry on. I put it on a large plaster but it doesn't stick very well, when he shakes his head it usually falls off, but I will persevere!

Would it be possible to put the honey on a pad and then hold the pad on the ear with Vetrap or similar stick to itself bandage? My terrier cut her ear, and I bound her ear to her head with Vetrap, and it stopped the blood being spread everywhere every time she shook, and it healed quickly, but I wouldn't think your dog would really like that on a permanent basis? Just a thought - as it doesn't stick to the hair, just itself!!

Hi, thank you so much for your concern and help, unfortunately our lovely old boy was pts on Monday. He had stopped eating, despite being bought every tempting thing in the shop, and was getting rather thin, so we decided to let him go. It was very sad but time just caught up with him in the end. RIP Harvey xx

I was told told to mix it with vaseline for quick absorption and the dog/horse is less likely to lick it off....Good luck xx
