Just flicking through new rule book and see that rules for restricted classes have changed (had to go and find last years rule book in recycling bin to check!) last year it said not to have qualified for Hoys or RI in previous or current year. This year it says not to have been placed 1st - 8th in previous or current year. Anyone else noticed that?

yes noticed, so for example the HOYS 13hh WHP winner could be a restricted Nursery stakes pony...

Oh must look at that, so you could have won HOYS 3 years ago but now be restricted from the sounds of it??

Ridiculous, imo its purely because the entries at championship shows in rest classes are considerably smaller then all the otner classes, even the novices. It will just be another class with the same top ten ponies, not allowing any new ones to have any glory, the name 'restricted' has become rather redundant seeing as it will only restrict the very few ponies that have been first to eighth at hoys, you will still have hoys ponies in the restricteds.

Haha! Yes good if it opens it up to you, but can't really see the point in having them now?? Where as I always saw restricted as a stepping stone class....but now as it's only top 8 for last 2 years excluded it's basically an open class minus a few.....

I totally agree but both my ponies been to HOYS and the SP qualified RI last year so it ties me up a little even when Maisie is just getting to grips with them both. So although we were ok with the M&M in these classes this year its opened it up for the SP too now. I agree a bit pointless now.

Yep noticed this when the Winter Champs schedule came through and have to agree it is probably to boost numbers but a shame when you have a novice pony (which we have this year) normally we would try and do the Novice and Restricted classes as stable is just too expensive to do one class. Oh well just have to see how she comes on, on the other hand the open pony can now do the restricted!!!

so my proven mare with various HOYS results, who couldn't go last year, is restricted this year? Seems rather strange....

I don't think it has been thought through. I think it is just a matter of let's get more money and bigger classes. Maybe they should do a restricted and a TRUE restricted lol! Think the open and restricted line ups won't vary much like others have said.

It's pretty easy to stay novice these days too!! Lol especially with a younger pony.
