I have two ponies on loan and I love them dearly. we would never have been able to afford to buy a pony but that does not impair my financial ability to care for them. I know many people have negative views on loaning but I think it can work very well for both parties and that to a certain extent with loaning the owner can keep better tabs on the horse/pony, as long as it is loaned locally to you so you can visit regularly. I am sure lots of people will disagree!

Thankyou for your reply. If you dont mind me asking, do you pay for everything or does the owner pay for some of it?

I loaned A pony out to a family who seemed v nice years ago and it went in perfect condition we went to visit it about 5 months later, and it was in a terrible state. We picked it up the next day brought it back to the yard but unfortunately she died 4 days later . So i think the moral of the story is to reguarly check up on loaned horses and try and find someone local maybe by recommendation or word of mouth. There should be a loan agreement and people loaning the horse should take full responsibility for insurance vets bills stabling costs and anything else the horse might need . I would say the hardest thing is to see someone doing things a different way to what you would normally and if you don't have the time etc it could be better to sell in the long run . But there are great people out there whohave loaned horses and ponies i was just unlucky . What horse are you planning to loan out? x

I have a horse on loan but i own 3 others, i love him as much as my own! I have 2 veterans and a show pony that im too big for but i cannot part with any of the 3 i own so loan was the only option for me! My show pony is up for loan now! Ive had no bad experience with loaning!

we have a pony on loan and she is a dream, our shetland is on loan to her owners, so we did a swap! I am very happy and (I hope) they are too, plus the ponies are and so are the little riders. We pay for everything for our loaned pony, I sent the shetland's rugs etc with him as too small for anything else.

I pay for everything for both ponies including insurance, which I don't mind doing at all. One of the ponies will need JMB cert before we can show him though, which is a bit of a pain. With new rules I will have to pay for microchip too which will amount to a lot of money, especially if he measures out but that was something I accepted I would have to do when I loaned him.

I have one on full loan, she is a long way from owners home and very priviliged to have her, as i couldnt have afforded the lump sum to buy her but will care for her aswell as if not better than my own. I pay all costs, livery, farrier, worming, vaccinations, vet care, insurance, teeth & back, and treat her completley as my own do what i want when i want, But i always ask if i wanted to do something new ( she having 2 front shoes on tommrrow) our of common courtesy, to be told that i am trusted and do do as i wish, I always keep owner updated of her progress and my other pony as she bred him, and keisha is having good happy fun and is very much loved and part of the family

I have in the past had ponies on loan and had no problems, currently my shetland is out on loan to a local ish family. It is a arrangement that works well for us, he was no longer needed as a nanny pony here and is brilliant with small children so has gone to teach them the ropes. He has been out on loan previously to a number of families and generally comes home when the children have out grown him etc We have only ever had one problem and felt the need to bring him home. we always have a contract drawn up which states everyones responsibilities and allows access for us to check him. For us its a arrangement that works well.
