Today's rant is yard owners who flaunt their own rules!!! No turnout allowed, fields are shut but whose horses are allowed out??? Yep the YO horses in the fields!!! I realise it's their place, their prerogative but it's incredibly unfair! And they aren't in their own seperate grazing, it's the livery fields they're in!!!

I wiould never keep a horse where turnout isn't all year round. Too many stables and not enough land!!

Agreed too many stables and not enough land. However it's easy to say that you wouldn't keep a horse where there's no turnout, especially when you have your own land. Some of us are forced into it.

I sort of know how you feel chalky, our livery yard is small there's only 4 of us and we all get on but....
There's always a but!!!!
Our's are allowed out on a mud bath, they have wrecked it big style.... but on wet days we'l still get asked to leave them in
Where as the owners horse has its own little perfect field, which gets moved from paddock to paddock so he's never stood in a puddle never mind mud
My thinking is, they're lovely people, they own one horse and hes their everything. She doesn't want him out with others because hes very accident/injury prone and yep...its her land!
In spring/summer the paddocks are gorgeous and when eaten down they're moved to fresh ones (if wanted)
So I don't blame her, perks of being the owner i suppose. Lets just say the pro's far outweigh the con's and that's why I stay and like it xxxxxxx

There should be an all weather turn out area where each horse can go out daily. If the owner is not prepared to include this then they are just out for the money. My horses 's welfare comes first. Yes , I have my own land now but had 20 years of owning a horse without and she was always turned out in winter. I used to cycle for half an hour each way before and after school to ensure this happened. One winter I kept 2 15 miles from where I lived to get them somewhere I was happy with. It was 12 miles from work and I went at lunchtime in bad weather to get them in!! It now seems more important to an owner to have a school than have their horse where it would be happier.

Bit of a sweeping statement there judy !
I know of many horse owners - not just me - who do all they can to provide the best livery for their horses. We juggle our life styles, work, children, school runs, other commitments to give them whats best
No we don't have an all weather turn out area BUT yes there is an indoor arena that if nothing else they can daily stretch their legs in. In summer we have lovely post and rail paddocks, great hacking (including off road tracks and bridleways which go for miles) warm stables, our livery owner provides hay/haylage/straw/shavings at cost and collects for us, plus if stuck turns out and fetches in at no extra charge
The indoor school isn't the important factor, the package is. I muck out/turn out at the crack of dawn, I have children, 3 school runs (1 at playschool, 1 at primary and 1 at comprehensive) plus a job that starts at 9am till 3pm then school runs again, feed the family, then back up to yard for fetch in/exercise etc
So I'm making NO apologies for not cycling in my lunch 1/2 hour (dont get an hour)
I wish people on here wouldn't make such sweeping, judgmental statements about how wonderfully they cope when they dont know the situation of others!!!
<<<< Sorry judy not just aimed at you xxxx

I know what you mean on my old yard we weren't really allowed out unless it was for half an hour in the day.. Well some of us work so that's impossible to do so but..... the YO horses had 3 fields and used them everyday which i thought was a joke really as when moved on promised all year turnout which my horse needed as without turnout good luck trying to get on him.

I do think the owner is in a different category to clients - surely they're entitled to set what rules they want and it's up to the clients to decide whether to take it or leave it? I'm sure you all know that I'm the first to champion turnout for all horses but that's not what we're talking about here.
Puts on tin hat and runs for cover!

To the credit of our YO, her 3 fields are totally flooded and her ponies have been living in with hand grazing lunging and being ridden each day, whilst my fields are completely dry and my horses have continued out in day in at night routine all winter.
Some of the others have variable mud baths and are doing some in some out. I half expected to be asked to swap but to her credit I have been very lucky as my boys need daily turnout.
The water table here in the SE is higher than I've ever seen it and though there is plenty of acreage per horse, we have ancient springs bubbling in some of fields where theyve never been seen, and curiously flooding the higher fields you wouldn't expect.

I think judyh was referring to livery yard owners, not horse owners, and I do think I agree. I would not take more here than I could be absolutely sure I had turnout for.

Yes it is her yard, but you cannot deny its cruel to have a rule of no turnout citing she does the same for hers then puts her horses out when all the others have to stay in!

Her land, her rules. I rent grazing and stables and always work round the (lovely) owner. If you don't like it look for somewhere else!

I am! ETA - many of you are pointing out her yard her rules, this would be fine if they weren't forever changing. As with most yards, more turnout was promised than actually given and she stipulated her horses get exactly the same as the liveries. Well it turns out they don't! And moving somewhere that is honest about their turnout provision and that actually has some is nigh impossible so easier said than done!

So its ok to promise a service, take money, then stop the service. And in fact use the facility being paid for by a client, for your own use??

Yard owner may be possibly thinking of the long run of it by ensuring livery fields aren't ruined for summer, doesn't matter if her fields are ruined for summer as her land and her decision however liveries are paying for it, does that make sense? I know what you are saying about rule changing though, I could never be on a livery yard, I am too set in my own ways to follow livery yard rules lol.

There is a difference between the yard owner's horses being treated differently to liveries' horses if the liveries are receiving the service they are paying for - that is one of the perks of keeping your horse at home, you can do what you like with them, and liveries not receiving the service they were promised/are paying for.
Our 'livery' here is very simple - it is grazing in a herd, with water, shelter, and additional forage when needed, and for owners who live further away twice daily checks, and I will deal with any issues needing attention, but that is pretty much it - but we don't claim it is anything else.

The yo is using the liveries field though? I knew I had read that lol but was fighting sleep and browsing on here trying to stay awake to watch eastenders! In that case, it is unfair, I'd do as you are doing and find somewhere else!

I'm in a quandary at the moment with what to do about our livery. As I've already said they are lovely people, we have great grazing for 9 months of the year, the other 3 months are a bit weather dependent plus they hunt on the YO's land. They still get out some days but being by a river and this has been a very wet winter we've had quite a few days/weeks where we've been asked to keep them in, plus a day a week most weeks because of the hunt (so has the livery owner so no double standards there) But the added cost of extra bedding and extra hay/haylage has made some of my bills huge this winter. We have a small indoor school to use if nothing else just for a stretch of legs, great hacking, I get to keep my trailer there indoors, gorgeous warm stables and they provide hay/haylage/straw/or shavings at cost for everyone all in for £120 per month
Down the road a new spot has recently set up a livery yard, new wooden stables, somewhere for my trailer (ourdoors but secure) lovely all year round paddocks -winter ones and summer ones- so no days in, a sand outdoor area for lunging/schooling and offering this for £108 per month including all hay/haylage and straw.
My gawddddd what a saving!!
But I hate change, i'm scared of new people and yard politics and there'l be 5 other owners at this yard, its set up so that I'l have to interact with others and I'm not good with that. I'm not grumpy or nasty, quite the reverse. I'm a magnet for being taken advantage of and somehow ending up in a mess by trying to be nice. Where we are now all are lovely and do they're own thing, we do our horses at different times so dont actually see each other a lot - but help out if needed without it being expected. Perfect!
But I reckon I'l be in winter £100 a month better off at the new spot
Dilemma!! But I'm leaning towards staying where I am...better the devil you know and all that xx

I'm a bit of a "the grass isn't always greener" type person, no pun intended!! We're lucky we have our own place but yard politics would stress me out and sometimes being around people you know and trust far outweighs the monetary saving.
Also, as has been said above, what is promised at the start isn't always what actually happens. Maybe go with your heart not your head on this one x

Firstly where is it??? Lol! Do you know anyone on the yard?? Or anyone who knows anyone on there??? Is it a totally new set up or just new additional stables??? I'd be inclined to give it a go, you could always put your name down for a stable back at your old place. I know what you mean out moving, it's so difficult to know what to do for the best. But having been on a handful of yards these past few years having agreed prior to moving what was to be provided then something very different when actually resident there, I've had to pay for something I've not been getting. Frustrating to say the least! So if you are looking at more than you currently getting for less money, I'd jump at it.
