I am going to be showing a friend pure bred arab for her. She's a lovely little mare, and I am used to riding arab types however I am new to showing a pure bred arab having previously shown mainly natives and WHP. Any advice/tips would be very much appreciated! Will try to post a photo of her Thanks

She's a lovely little mare, and I am used to riding arab types however I am new to showing a pure bred arab having previously shown mainly natives and WHP. Any advice/tips would be very much appreciated! Will try to post a photo of her Thanks :) The Pure-Bred Arabian is shown as a 'Riding Horse'. Your mare should be shown as you would in any class where the animal is ridden by the judge. The 'go-round' is at walk, trot, canter, change rein (only a few strides of trot, NO stupid flamboyant 'extension' !) and straight back into canter on the left rein. Once settled, the class as a whole is sent on to gallop (a controlled gallop, not a headlong rush) once, along the safe long side, usually the 'grandstand' side. Then back to walk. The judge will then pull in. The judge then rides. You need a saddle and stirrups and leathers suitable for the Ride Judge (check the schedule/s, it may be a gentleman judge). Occasionally you may be asked to give an individual show which must include a gallop. Saddles are stripped off. She should be stood up properly - as for any normal ridden horse, NOT stretched with the head up like an in-hand Arab. The walk away & trot back is normal with no fancy flamboyance. Personally, I prefer to see riders in Tweed at regular shows, Blue jackets for a final at a BIG show. If you have a coloured browband on her please do not 'over-bling'. It is expected that her Breed characteristics will show, but over and above that, she MUST go like a proper Riding Horse. Enjoy!

Thank you very much for your response, that was very very helpful as there are certain things I may have done wrong as I am more used to natives! Also saved me rushing to get a new navy jacket, and I much prefer my tweed any way! Can I ask which type of browband you think is of preference? She's a flea-bitten type grey Thanks again

I'm somewhat old fashioned, so I prefer plain or plaited, like we do with Natives. But you can use a discreet colour which suits her (or which her owner likes!) such as blue & white. Keep the 'tails' short though.
Tip:- Arabs often don't like heavy things around their ears, (sometimes even their own mane or forelock is enough to make them agitated) so a simple, light browband is easiest!
The mare in my picture is "Liquidambar" - who to this day is perhaps the most prolific winning mare ever. She was born in 1984, bred by and belonged to Her Grace the Duchess of Rutland.
I broke her when she was 3 approaching 4 - and showed her from (almost before you were born!!) 1989 - 1993.
Amongst her very many successes, she won 3 Supreme British National Breed Championships and 5 British 'Mare' Championships, the RIHS and the International Arabian Championship, then at Towerlands. There were no Ridden Arabs at HOYS in those days, so those wins were the very best, the equivalent.
For a bit of fun, I also plaited her up and showed her as a Small Hack in HOYS classes. Unbelievably, she was always very highly placed due really to her exceptional 'ride'.
"Ellie" was a mare in a million and one to try to copy.

I think I prefer the plain too, I don't like anything too bling bling in the ring though! Plus she's a very sensitive sole and think it may annoy her to have anything too busy! She is beautiful, I thought I recognised her from somewhere, definitely seen photos of her. I can see why did so well. I'm looking forward to the change in class really, I love arabs to ride and always have, they seem to suit me best really. Thank you very much, I'm sure I'll have more things to ask you though, always think you're best asking the questions and admitting you don't know!

That's how I learnt the 'trade' and I'll always be so grateful to those who helped me along the way. Good luck with your mare - enjoy the classes. :)
