I've mentioned our problem on another post but need more advice, the choice of bits nowadays is like feeds - far too much choice !!
Section D now 6 years old, lovely soft mouth and schooling well in a snaffle worn with a flash noseband to stop him fiddling with it, teeth checked all ok. The problem is as hes getting fitter hes getting stronger especially when out hacking, luckily most of our hacking is off road but he can get a tad excited in trot/canter or when jumping and tries to tank my 16 year old daughter off. He's strong when he does this, tucks his head in and takes some stopping.
I dont want to ruin the work we've put in BUT my daughter hacks out alone and I need to know she has brakes when needed

Avoid any sort of gag or lowering action. Waterford or even kimblewick. I am a snaffle person but your daughter needs to be safe.

A balding gag has a raising action I use the neue Schule one on my connie with rope cheeks for faster work! Stop him galloping with head between his knees! Copied of neue Schule : The loose ring is more flexible, discouraging the horse from leaning, which may happen with a fixed cheek. The two rein options will allow the rider to have varying degrees of control being able to differentiate between the snaffle rein and the running cheek rein that provides poll pressure. However, many riders successfully only employ the running cheek rein which maximises on control and lift from the shoulder. Use either in conjunction with our own rolled leather cheeks, aesthetically pleasing and softer in their action, or our rope cheeks that have a faster action.

We had a similar situation with my daughter and her pony. At home she rides and schools in a snaffle but when out jumping, the pony gets stronger and really pulls her into fences with the result that they can get too fast both on the approach and after landing! Like yours, pony has a good mouth and I didn't want to go for anything too strong and I also didn't want to add any poll pressure as the mare is very sensitive and would probably hate it. We decided to try a Fylde Magic bit and it has been brilliant in achieving its goal with the result that pony seems happy in it and child feels like she has brakes when she needs them without it being too much.

Well I'm still undecided what to try 1. They cost a blooming fortune and I'd probably buy the wrong one 2. Daughter is adam'ant she wants to stick to the snaffle 3. I've started dreaming about bits I havent sat on him in months so I'm going to ride him out again myself and see what he's like With faulty breaks What could go wrong?

Maybe try something with rollars to stop him grabbing hold of it. There's been a few neue schule bits on ebay going fairly cheap just recently. Worth a try as at least they will always resell...

Try the bit bank, you can try before you buy! And if I remember righty it's a 30 day trial.

Thanks bubbles, he doesnt actually grab hold of it, he's got a fair neck on him now so he either throws it up and looks like a moose and tanks, or tucks his head in and battles you for strength, 90% of the time he's fine its just when he's feeling exuberant !!

Right tonight I popped an old bit of mine on him just to see, its a mullen mouthed pelham and I popped 2 sets of reins on it. Hannah kept her hands soft ( she has lovely hands anyway) usually hes permanently chewing on the bit and he didnt, plus he frofffffed up in his mouth beautifully and did the best schooling work we've ever seen him do. Now I'm not saying this is the bit I want to keep him in BUT he obviously prefers a bit without a joint
I'm hoping I'm narrowing in to the right bit, suggestions pleaseeeeeeee ?
