hi I purchased a pony three years ago for my daughter no history well to cut a long story short she was in foal had a December foal and all was well kept foal a very nice filly mini me of mum fast forward to sept last year I purchased a very nice coloured cob mare for myself after searching a long time for a forever one after not riding for approx. 5 years after a bad accident I just clicked with her about 10 days ago she started to look slightly swollen on her teats I thought just because she had been on some better grass but got more and more so had vet today who said yes in foal and thinks only got approx week or so to go now my main concern is she is two big to foal in stable so I have made field foal safe as much as possible but have electric tape along one side worrying myself silly of how to make this as safe as possible
sorry for the long waffling but I want mum and foal as safe as possible as even did not want another foal it will have a home for life with me if needed

How big is your stable? Your mare could cope if she had to. Believe me, you'd marvel what small pen spaces we manage to lamb sheep in!
Hygiene is the main criteria - make sure she can foal onto a clean area and you dress the foal's navel asaVp. Iodine is old fashioned but still the best. You can slosh it around and it dries up the navel stump quicker than any posh spray. Dress twice if you feel the stump is still wet after a few hours.
As for the electric tape - why not simply turn it off until the forthcoming foal is old enough to cope with it?
Not an easy situation for you - Good Luck !!

She won't let the foal go near anything she didn't think was safe. We turned our foal out Sunday he was born Saturday and we just made sure there where no gaps in the hedge. Mum keeps him in eye sight and tells him when he shouldn't be venturing off into the bushes. All will be fine. If your worried get camping lol. Good luck

thanks for your replies no foal yet but must be close waxed up now stable is 10x12 so not that small and she is only 14.2 but built like a tank and she is more relaxed out she has post and rail between her and our other two and no other horses on other sides field is only small and no other dangers will keep you posted of any news

The mare will steer the foal away from the electric but maybe just turn it off for your peace of mind!
Had one who was stabled in for about a month then though oh it's a nice day I'll let her out for a few hours.. 30mins later there was a foal in the field!

I don't think the mare will necessarily steer the foal from the electric fence. The main worry is the foal will roll under it or get its legs caught. One of mine even managed to roll through a post and rail and ended up in the adjoining field .Luckily I found her quickly- your foal will be bigger so not such a worry. Foals are very stupid and uncontrolled when new born. I'd foal out as if the mare is new to you as you won't know how careful she is when she goes to lie down in smaller space. Always prefer mine to foal out but agree its a dilemma. Most mares choose a good safe place to foal and I hope all goes well.

I'm sure your mare will be fine. I personally wouldn't turn the tape off. If baby gets a sting it will discourage it from going near.
