Quite out the blue our pony started with a cough recently. He also had signs of an infection and was treated with antibiotics. However, he is now on Ventipullmin as cough worsened and vet said she suspected an allergy all along, possibly to pollen. If the cough doesn't show any signs of clearing in the near future the vet has recommended that the pony is scoped. Wondering how any of you with similar issues manage your ponies and whether you are able to ride them as normal etc?

What signs were there of an infection? Are her eyes clear? My pony developed a hay allergy and coughed but also had white mucus coming down her nose as well. She struggled to breathe. She had Ventipulmin when she had her first acute attack( in Winter) It works but is expensive. I would have thought scoping is pricey too unless you are insured. I was offered an inhaler but vet thought that would not be easy to use so we stick with managed grazing and Ventipulmin if its bad.Been ok for 9 months now. If is just a dry cough then perhaps scoping is the answer.

One of mine developed an allergy cough which coincided with the buttercups flowering last year - this may have been a coincidence, not the actual cause. The pony was prescribed anti-histamines which didn't work. The cough cleared up on its own after about 6 weeks.

There's a lot of Oil seed rape close by judyh. It is a dry cough which we've also noticed when he gets down to have a roll is quite bad - He's been fine all through the Winter, out during the day and in at night, so vet thinking if allergy it's not caused by dust.

It certainly is bad round here, the way the smell carries the air must be saturated with pollen. Hopefully it is that and will clear as the flowers die back.

Gilbertgrape he had a temperature, a nasty snotty nose and the cough when we called the vet, hence he was treated for an infection!

Mine suffers over the summer months with a cough. My vet gave me an inhaler (flixotide) with one of those mask things that you use to give them to children. I'm also using global herbs pollenex which I started about 3 weeks ago. Touch wood he seems to be doing great. He's had the problem the last few years and till now I'd not found anything to help. He still coughs once or twice when we start exercising but after that he's great. Tried ventipulmin last year but it didn't really help.

In all honesty crack on with scoping. It's the only way tog really know what's going on.
We messed about for ages with a cough that was thought to be an allergy but there was an underlying Iung infection causing the irritation and cough as well as a build up of mucus etc from dust
Two pronged approach to treat and manage dust exposure
Haven't looked back once completely cleared but certainly feel ventipulmin masked the problem which is why it got so bad
We then used winergy ventilate. Great supplement and he's now off it completely and no hint of a problem
