Not sure if this is the right place for this but could someone tell me the best route from Skipton to Kirbymoorside avoiding Sutton Bank in the horsebox. My sat nav has sent me some strange ways in the past and would quite like to do Ryedale this year. Thanks

You can go a long way round by the A64. To avoid Sutton Bank you can go Coxwold / Wass / Ampleforth /Sproxton to hit the A170. We go that way but it's quite twisty. Tried the York to Helmsley route but still some steep hills. You have to climb to get there - hate the journey. There is also Wass Bank- I have come down it in a box but would not go up. No easy route I'm afraid

You need to do A64 York to Malton, A169 to Pickering, A170 to Kirkbymoorside, straight over roundabout 1 mile, showfield on left, prob adds a few miles but is easiest route and at least not as many gear changes, hope to see you there, not seen you in yonks!

I lived at the bottome of Sutton bank for quite a few years. It's really not that bad. Select low gear from the bottom of the first hill and just take it steady. Don't be tempted to change up even on the slight decline of you aren't confident to change back down before the s bends. Same on the way down. Select low gear and just take it steady.
I've driven many a time up and down there for hunting. It's bark is worse than its bite.

I also think wass bank is worse than Sutton. It's a lot narrower!!! Got stuck up there one year in the snow when I was riding out for les eyre at the top of the bank!!!

I've gone down it in the lorry but not been brave enough to go up it, sometimes its not our driving its the twits in cars that crawl from the bottom cause a snarl up and then you're at a standstill, not nice on a 1 in 4 hill. Blueskyes on here had her brakes fail on it a few weeks back, luckily she managed to stop but it frightened the wits out of her. Cant say I blame her.
Wass is wicked, I wouldn't tackle that in a lorry! You've got no chance if you meet anyone.

A friend of mines brakes failed in the horsebox coming down Sutton Bank recently and although my wagon is bril I would be concerned getting stuck behind someone else going up so if we do go think it will be the long way round for me!
