The Showing Register is instigating a new set of awards in the showing classes at our summer show at Onley on the 18th 19th July.
The awards will be given to riders not in the top 4 placings who have shown exceptional perseverance perhaps with a difficult pony or by getting the very best out of a pony that is not a natural. We are still developing this concept and would like your input !
Any suggestions are welcome plus we want to think of a really good name for the awards.... over to you !

I really like this idea! Judges could also look for riders who have excellent showmanship and ring craft, generally those who show off their pony really well. I know they have similar awards at the Pony Club showjumping championships called the Horsemanship Award, for the rider who gives their horse/pony the very best opportunity to jump the course well, even if they don't jump clear.

With all the ultra competitive-ness about it would be nice to see a society do something like this concentrating on the good sportsmanship and gracious, kind nature of some competitors, those that ride sympathetically (as already mentioned) those that don't cut up others, are pleasant to their pony etc and I think I'd call it the 'good egg award' but thats a very old fashioned term, it would cover anything from riding a difficult horse well to reassuring a nervous fellow competitor. Things can get a bit cut throat at some shows and you often see those that behave not so well get the top prizes
Another option if you want a totally different alternative may be to award a rosette for the best presentation in hand during the strip phase of ridden showing as a 'best handler' prize (inspired by a thread elsewhere on the forum at the moment)

Thanks for all the input on here and FB.
We are going to call the new awards TSR STAR RIDER AWARD. To be awarded to a rider not in the top four placings who has shown determination in managing a difficult pony or who has given an outstanding show but not made it into the top four. Riders may only win one such award during the summer show. The awards will be in the open classes exc HOYS Q.
