My friend acquired a 6year old ride and drive Trotter X from some travellers around christmas time. Her plan was to turn him away for a while, bring him on and sell. Anyway due to lack of time hes just been out in the field until now. Hes a pacer. she wants to sell him now as has no time for him but of course isnt having much interest ! Shes now offered to give him to me for free ! Hes not my type, we ride drive and compete welsh. But i am thinking of working with him and going half each when he sells .
over the last week, me and my dad have done a little bit with him. My dad drove him , he was a good boy but when asked to trot he just paced. even in walk he tends to pace.
i have lunged him and managed to get him to trot by keep bringing him back to walk and asking again everytime he paced. seemed to work well, then lunged him again 2 days later and did the same technique but nope he just wanted to pace!
we then had a little ride yesterday and again paced everytime asked to trot .
So hes definitely going to take a lot of work ! Hes a lovely boy, very chilled out unflappable type. But where am i ment to start? is thier anyone here with an ex pacer?

I had a pacer and she was the same. It's so hard to get it out of them but I done what you have started, lunging and rewarding the diagonal trot. And we got it consistently in the end When I got on it felt we took a step back as she reverted to pacing but I kept rising and stayed so still and pushed the trot out of her and then rewarded. She only does it now it she's stressed or unbalanced but you learn to feel the trigger and fix quick before it happens ie relax the rein.

I have one! My first thoughts are that if you intend on breaking this horse to ride and sell on within a few months - it is not going to work. We bought a pacing mare who was used to bolting down roads in a cart at 30mph. We have had her for over 3 years now. She can walk and trot nicely, and is a safe hack. She will just about canter on the lunge but not when ridden unless jumping or hacking. I taught her to trot by rising when she paced and using trot poles and lots of hacking. She rides purely by voice. She has come a long way however, considering that her walk, trot and canter were all the same just at different speeds! Now she has 3 separate paces, but is still not ready for proper pony parties yet!
