Yes i have towed a trailer with my wagon up Sutton bank, it was very scary but mainly because i was frightened to miss my gears. If in an automatic it would have been much better. Just keep in a low gear and don't bother about who is behind you just keep it slow.

It's not what's behind you driving up that you need to think about, it's what's in front! If they dither and crawl up or even stall and it happens frequently, can be tricky for you!! I live in the vicinity of Sutton Bank and after experiencing total brake failure going down it in a 7.5t wagon I will neither drive up or down it anymore!!! Now have a trailer and still wouldn't risk it!! x

I believe there are other routes because we've been many times and I'm pretty sure we've never gone up sutton bank!

I won't go up or down in my 7.5t wagon. As bluesskyes says it's not always what's behind you and especially after her terrible experience with brakes!! It's a long way round for us so unfortunately not doing ryedale again this year. Shame as its a great show. Would definitely look at alternative route for you

There is signed route York side of Thirsk on the A19. I have been up Sutton bank as a passenger in a big 4x4 that was towing a trailer, I defiantly would not attempt it.

As I posted on the last topic about Sutton bank. I've driven up and down hundreds of times, all times, all weathers. Never had a problem but I'm a confident driver and as I lived directly at the bottom of the bank I've driven the lorries up there since my teens. It's not a road for the faint hearted but I've driven far worse in wales!!!!!

I live near Sutton Bank- don't even consider it!! You need to go through Coxwold and Ampleforth , don't attempt Wass Bank either. Follow route signs for caravan route avoiding Sutton Bank , they are banned. If it's not safe for them it's not safe for a trailer.

Agree with judyh.....it's not a nice road at all We would never do it with ours. Not worth the risk

I've done far worse in Wales in the lorry. Keep in a very low gear and let your engine do the work. Brake failure on a hill normally means you've tried to use your brakes instead of your engine and have overheated your brakes. I

Read the post -it's a trailer!!! As I said caravans are banned for a very good reason. I've been up in a box many years ago ( I wasn't driving ) . Please don't put yourself , animals and others in danger.

On my way home via Sutton Bank a couple of weeks ago with my car, when everything came to a standstill due to 2 HGV's and a horsebox stuck on the hill. As I said previously, it's what's in front of you that can make the difference between an eventful/smooth trip up/down the bank no matter how experienced a driver you consider yourself to be!! Good luck at Ryedale Show Nellie and hope you have a safe journey whatever route you take!
